The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 - PCB Main is the primary logic board for Blackmagic’s most powerful rackmount capture and playback solution. Given the "Extreme" nature of this hardware, the Main PCB is a massive, high-density board engineered to handle 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0, and high-speed PCIe or Thunderbolt 3 data streams simultaneously.

Enterprise-Grade Processing Power

The Main PCB acts as the heart of the UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3, managing the heavy lifting for 4K DCI and Ultra HD workflows up to 60p. It is specifically designed to support:

  • 4:4:4:4 and 12-bit RGB Support: The board handles extremely high color precision for high-end color grading in DaVinci Resolve.

  • Hardware Codec Support: It features onboard processing for hardware-accelerated encoding/decoding, reducing the CPU load on the host workstation.

  • Stereoscopic 3D: Manages the dual-stream SDI connections required for high-frame-rate 3D capture and playback.

Extensive I/O Integration

Because the UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 is a 2RU rackmount unit, the Main PCB is much larger than those found in the "Mini" or portable units. It serves as the mounting point for a vast array of professional connections:

  • Dual 12G-SDI Inputs/Outputs: For quad-link or dual-link 4K configurations.

  • HDMI 2.0 In/Out: Providing the full 18Gbps bandwidth required for 4K 60p HDR monitoring.

  • Analog Video I/O: Component, Composite, and S-Video processing logic.

  • Thunderbolt 3 & PCIe: The board manages the high-speed bridge to the host computer, whether via the 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 port or the external PCIe Gen 3 connector for dedicated workstation integration.

Audio and Sync Management

The Main PCB is responsible for more than just video; it handles a massive amount of audio and sync data:

  • AES/EBU and Analog Audio: Manages the high-quality A/D and D/A conversion for the balanced XLR inputs.

  • Timecode and Reference: Houses the logic for LTC timecode and tri-sync/black burst reference inputs, essential for broadcast facility integration.

  • RS-422 Deck Control: Includes the serial control logic for interfacing with professional broadcast decks.

Key Features

  • Genuine High-Performance Spare: Designed specifically for the "Extreme 3" iteration (Thunderbolt 3 version).

  • Broadcast Reliability: Built with high-tolerance components intended for 24/7 operation in broadcast environments.

  • Multi-Format Support: Pre-configured to work with the full spectrum of SD, HD, Ultra HD, and 4K DCI formats.

  • PCIe Bridge Logic: Specifically optimized for low-latency communication with the host OS.

Technical Installation Note

The UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 is a complex, multi-component piece of hardware. Replacing the Main PCB is a significant undertaking:

  • Internal Cable Density: The unit contains numerous internal ribbon cables and power looms connecting the front panel, power supply, and rear I/O. These must be meticulously labeled and reconnected.

  • Thermal Considerations: The Main PCB features large heat sinks for its processing chips. Ensure there is no obstruction to the internal fans after the board is seated.

  • Firmware Sync: After installation, the board may require a firmware update via the Blackmagic Desktop Video Utility to ensure it matches the software version on the host computer.

  • Static Hazard: Due to the high cost and complexity of the board, an ESD-safe workspace is non-negotiable during installation.

Excellent
Format: Paperback
As a second-year cardiology fellow, I used to get very confused with hemodynamics during my cath and CCU rotations. This book is a gem, it is clear and logically written, has great explanations of waves and great illustrations. The constrictive pericarditis, valvular disease, and FFR chapters are impressive with echocardiographic and physiologic correlations. I actually liked everything I read, like the nice differentiation between the pressure tracings of various chambers. Some of it requires multiple reads but it is worth it. I realized that I had missed a great deal of the basic understanding of pressure tracing configuration, wedge pressure, shunts. There are also over 50 cases in a test-answer format probably covering and reviewing most hemodynamic topics. It is like 2 books in 1.

Bought this book. Good content. However my copy is in black and white. There are references to colored arrows. I later learned that others have a colored copy.

AMAZING BOOK!!!!!
Format: Paperback
AMAZING BOOK!!!!!! WOW!!! everything you need to know about hemodynamics. This book explains the concepts with graphing, images. It also summarizes the key points. I wish I have read that book sooner. I could not believe it that in 1 book I found all the information I needed for the cardiology boards and my daily practice. Thank you o ugh Dr. Hanna for taking the time to write this book. Much Thanks!!!!

A welcome addition to training in hemodynamics
Format: Paperback
Purchased this book for my husband, the director of the Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist Program at a small college. He has been very pleased with the book, calling it a long-overdue addition to the field. It's very helpful in training technologists and others working in Cardiac Cath Labs to recognize hemodynamic waveforms and do calculations. It offers a lot of practice questions in addition to explanations.

Clear Concise
Format: Paperback
I like the way that this book is laid out. Rather than long drawn out droning chapters it is split into shorter more specific sections. The graphics are plenty big. The case examples and guided questions are useful in reinforcing the knowledge. A good resource for any new CVT or CVT student.
