This is a special one. The Seiko Elnix is an unusual watch, sitting right between mechanical and quartz technology. Produced during the transition from traditional watchmaking to quartz in the early 1970s, it uses an electronically regulated balance movement rather than a purely mechanical or quartz system.
This example features a deep blue dial and is running perfectly. The applied indices and hands shine over the flawless dial. The day wheel is bilingual, displaying both Japanese Kanji and English.
The case and bracelet are in excellent condition, showing only very minor signs of use. If you look very closely, a few very tiny scratches can be seen on the dial and there is a light scratch on the clasp. Aside from that, the watch is in mint condition. The original bracelet fits wrists up to approximately 18.5 cm and features a spring-loaded extension that adds about another centimeter if needed.
Details
Seiko’s Elnix line represents an interesting moment in watchmaking history, when manufacturers experimented with electronic regulation before quartz fully took over.
Introduced in the early 1970s, the calibre 0703 is an electronically regulated mechanical movement. It uses a transistor circuit and battery to control the balance wheel, improving stability and accuracy compared to traditional purely mechanical watches.
Unlike quartz movements that would soon dominate the market, the Elnix still relies on a conventional gear train and balance, making it a rare hybrid between mechanical watchmaking and early electronic technology.
