THE first-ever collection of Canadas premier underground cartoonist.

Rand Holmes was Canadas most revolutionary artist in his heyday, the star cartoonist at the Georgia Straight newspaper in British Columbia during the 1970s. His hippie hero, Harold Hedd, became the spokesman of the emerging counterculture as he avoided work, explored free love, and flouted drug laws. The Adventures of Harold Hedd spread across the globe in the wave of underground comix and newspapers of the era and Holmes became famous or at least notorious. While his comic character was bold and blatant, the artist was shy and quiet, well on his way to becoming a complete hermit.

This book is an intimate and expansive account of a very private man who expressed his deepest feelings in the then disreputable medium of comix. He didnt talk much but he sure wrote a lot, avowed his widow Martha. This biography/retrospective includes generous selections from his private journals and correspondence, family photo albums, sketchbooks, and personal anecdotes from his friends and colleagues. His artistic history began haltingly on the lonely windswept plateau of Edmonton, flourished in Vancouver and San Francisco, and concluded peacefully on Lasqueti Island, a remote backwater in the Straits of Georgia where he lived out his dreams of pioneering and homesteading.

Holmes life story is richly illustrated with drawings, comic strips, watercolors, and paintings that span his whole career, from the hot rod cartoons he drew as a teenager, dozens of covers for the Georgia Straight, pornographic cartoons for the sex tabloid Vancouver Star, to complete comic stories from Slow Death Funnies, Dope Comix, All Canadian Beaver, Death Rattle, Grateful Dead Comix, and many more. The full-length Harold Hedd comic novels, Wings Over Tijuana and Hitlers Cocaine are reprinted in their entirety together for the first time. This unique collection of art documents a lifetime of work by one of the most talented artists of his generation. Holmes died in March 2002 from Hodgkins lymphoma, and his ashes are buried next to the Art Centre he helped build on Lasqueti Island. A retrospective exhibition of his original work was held five years later at the community hall.

Author Patrick Rosenkranz met Holmes in his salad days and remained in touch throughout his life. The Holmes family gave him complete access to their art collection and personal files, and encouraged him to tell the whole truth about Rand Holmes life and work.

Fun dog toy, but not for heavy chewers
Color: Pink, Size: 14 IN
The armadillo is cute. My pittie, Sasha, was very excited to see it. She just had TPLO surgery on her left knee (she tore her ACL just before the 4th of July), and I wanted to get her something she could play with while she convalesces, that isn't a ball—she really likes to run and jump and chase the ball, but with her knee out of commission, I didn't want her to get depressed being trapped in her crate while she heals—with this toy, she was able to keep playing and not over excert herself and get more hurt. It quickly became her favorite toy; she chews it relentlessly and gets made when I take it from her (see below). It makes a funky squeak that's not a high-pitched squeak, like I thought it would be; it's more a low-pitched, lowing sound like a baby calf. One thing I would like to point out to other purchasers about what the description says: "Durable and Long Lasting - Made from premium soft materials, our cute plush dog toys can withstand rough play for indoor or outdoor and last for years to come. The textured surface also helps massage and soothe your dog's gums during playtime" This is a little misleading. It's a good texture and Sasha loved to play with it, but it wasn't very durable. It might be when compared to other chew toys, but not for my baby. She tore the nose off within 20 minutes of getting it. The next morning, she ripped off an ear, and I had to pull the stuffing out of the face so she wouldn't eat it while chewing away. She doesn't seem to mind, but I sure wish it had held up a little more. All-in-all, this was a good toy for a few days.

Must buy!
Color: Grape
My dogs love this and so do I. It really smells like “fun grape” like a fun smelling marker. It’s gentle for their teeth and durable! They are both interested in it and take turns using it, pretty awesome!

Great for SuperChewers. Keeps my Golden busy.
Color: Bear, Color: Bear
My dog loves it and it keeps her busy for a while. She actually pulls it out of her toy basket and brings it to me when she wants it filled. I break her treats into some pieces that are easy to get and some a little harder. This way she doesn’t get them too fast or loose interest if they’re harder to get. Also, she’s had it for 3 months and there’s barely a mark on it and she’s still a puppy that chews her toys to pieces.

Mostly happy
Color: Grape
Have a 1 1/2 yr old Belgian Malinois who needs things to do. I bought these and he loved it. Bad thing, it took him 1 day to chew the rope off both grape and pineapple. The stems on the cherry were also chewed off. The rest of the toy is intact and he still loves it.
