Is Multiculturalism Dead? is an essential read for anyone interested in the persistent debates surrounding multiculturalism in liberal democracies. This compelling book delves into the complex meanings and implications of multiculturalism across various societies, exploring how the concept has evolved over time and evaluating claims of its demise. Author Christian Joppke presents a thoughtful analysis, juxtaposing gay rights in the United States with the accommodation of Islam in Europe. Through this examination, he reveals that liberal constitutionalism inherently supports a form of multiculturalism centered on the individual, making it not only relevant but essential to contemporary society.

This groundbreaking work challenges the narrative that multiculturalism is on the decline, highlighting ongoing impulses toward cultural diversity and individual freedoms. Perfect for students, scholars, and anyone engaged in social sciences and legal studies, this book offers a clear and rigorous perspective on the future of multiculturalism.

Key features include:
- A comprehensive analysis of multicultural theories
- Insights into the relationship between individual rights and cultural diversity
- A critical look at the political context of multicultural policies globally
- An accessible yet scholarly approach to a pressing social issue.

Description:

Multiculturalism is controversial in the liberal state and has frequently been declared dead, even in countries that have never had a policy under that name. This authoritative book reviews the different meanings multiculturalism has acquired across theories, countries, and domains to evaluate the extent of its demise and the ways in which it lives on.

Christian Joppke intriguingly argues that, beyond the ebb and flow of policy, liberal constitutionalism itself bears out a multiculturalism of the individual that is not only alive but necessary in a liberal society. Through a provocative comparison of gay rights in the United States and the accommodation of Islam in Europe, he shows that liberal constitutionalism constrains majority power, requiring the state to be neutral about people s values and ethical commitment. It cannot but give rise to multiple ways of life or cultures, as people are endowed with the freedom to embrace them. Accordingly, impulses toward multiculturalism persist, despite its political crisis, but with a new accent on the individual, rather than group, as the unit of integration.

Tightly argued and clearly written, this book provides a judicious assessment of multiculturalism in the West and will be of interest to a broad readership across the social sciences and legal studies.

Comfy and cute.
I was looking for a Converse alternative for a multitude of reasons. These were perfect. I love the slip-on style. The leather laces stay in place much better than the Converse cotton laces and there is way more sole support, which is a huge plus. I purchased these in black about a year ago and then went for the camo pair. As for the black pair, I wore them regularly for a year. After that time, the shoe didn't feel as comfortable anymore, and the fabric outer around the ankle began to fray, and the white outer trim was beginning to detach from the bottom sole. With that, I was pleased with how long they lasted. As for the camo pair, I anticipate the same quality and comfort. While super cute, the only draw back is the mismatched pattern. If you look at the pics, the one shoe has more gold embellishment at the toe area and the other one doesn't. This bothers me a bit as I would have liked it to match. Otherwise, I'm happy with both purchases so far and will continue to buy them in the future.
