De nieuwe tracks van de Canadese singer/songwriter klinken namelijk alsof ze uit een ver verleden stammen. Het album bevat een aantal Country classics die juist ten noorden van de grens van de US stammen. 'Songs of the Plains' is dan ook bedoeld als eerbetoon aan Wall's thuisland en in zijn eigen spaarzame manier maakt hij zonder opsmuk duidelijk dat waar hij ook gaat en staat “the rustle of wheat fields start calling his name”. Geproduceerd door Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Amanda Shires), krijgt hij hulp van wat oudgedienden waaronder pedal steel ace Lloyd Green, drummer Chris Powell en Willie Nelson’s longtime harmonicaspeler Mickey Raphael.
