En al is Gonzalo niet diens biologische vader, hij moet en zal het beter doen dan de nutteloze mannen uit zijn eigen familie.Dat lukt echter maar ten dele en wanneer er eindelijk een dichtbundel van hem wordt gepubliceerd, verliest hij de vaderambities uit het oog en ook zijn zoon. Vele jaren verstrijken voordat er weer enige hoop gloort op een hereniging. De appel blijkt niet ver van de boom te zijn gevallen, want ook de jongen is verzot op poëzie. Bijna een vader is een roman over het gewicht van liefde, over vaderschap en de tragikomische bevrijdingsstrijd van een man die iets heel anders had verwacht van het leven.
