Zo verandert Sonic 's nachts in een weerwolf, wat hem een stuk langzamer, maar ook veel sterker maakt. Met deze nieuwe krachten moet hij op zoek naar een aantal speciale smaragden die over de wereld verspreid zijn. Alleen dan kan Sonic de chaos herstellen en zijn wereld redden van Dr. Eggman.

Sonic Unleashed speelt zich af in een driedimensionale wereld, waarin Sonic zich op een klassieke 2D-manier beweegt. Het blauwe game-icoon is weer even snel als altijd, maar moet met zijn nieuwe krachten ook vaak het gevecht aangaan, waardoor Sonic Unleashed meer variatie op de traditionele snelle gameplay van de Sonic-serie.
