HD Carbon Steel (ook wel High-Carbon Steel of koolstofstaal genoemd) is veel sterker en harder dan RVS (Roestvrij Staal), dit komt omdat er meer Carbon in zit.

Relevant voor in de tuin is dat Carbon Steel producten anders reageren op vocht dan rvs-producten. RVS kan door de toevoeging van chroom hartstikke goed tegen vocht en is 100% roestvrij. Carbon Steel heeft geen chroom toevoeging, maar zal alsnog niet snel roesten. Dit komt door een beschermlaag die ontstaat in reactie met vocht (Patina), vergelijkbaar met de laag die je soms ziet op koper. Carbon Steel is dus niet roestvrij, maar wel roestbestendig.
