Met de steun van zijn dealer, Paul Durand Ruel, vond Monet in de omgeving de ideale landschappen voor plein air schilderen. Hij presenteerde "Poppy Field" of "Coquelicots" op de eerste Impressionistische tentoonstelling. Het schilderij, dat nu tot de beroemdste ter wereld behoort, weerspiegelt de sfeer van een zomerse

Hij presenteerde "Poppy Field" of "Coquelicots" op de eerste Impressionistische tentoonstelling. Het schilderij, dat nu tot de beroemdste ter wereld behoort, weerspiegelt de sfeer van een zomerse wandeling door de velden.

Monet vervaagde de contouren en creëerde een kleurrijk ritme met verfklodders, waarbij klaprozen centraal stonden. De grote vlekken op de voorgrond benadrukken zijn focus op visuele indruk. Dit was een stap richting abstractie.

In het landschap zijn twee moeder-kind duo's te zien, welke vooral dienen om een diagonale lijn in het schilderij te vormen. Er zijn twee kleurzones: een rode en een blauwgroene. De jonge vrouw en het kind op de voorgrond zijn waarschijnlijk Monet zijn vrouw, Camille, en hun zoon Jean.
