Contemporary Oriental Medicine: Concepts is a bold new volume by Leon Hammer, M.D. The culmination of over sixty years of experience as a practitioner, teacher, and writer, Concepts represents a lifetime of work, study, and devotion to the search for a true path to healing. Following on from the teachings of his mentor, Dr. John H.F. Shen, Dr. Hammer presents an evolved and updated understanding of the medicine of the renowned Menghe-Ding lineage of Chinese medicine, of which he is now a successor. Concepts is much more than a practical manual, although it is brimming with valuable clinical advice. It also presents a new philosophy: a new way of looking at medicine, and at the world in which we live.

Contemporary Oriental Medicine is about so much more than just where to insert needles, or which herbs to prescribe. Rather, it represents a paradigm shift in healing and awareness, giving both patients and practitioners the tools they need to enact real recovery, and change their lives for the better. The book explores, among other subjects, theories on ecology; terrain, stress, root, and vulnerability; the vital role of the Liver in Chinese medicine; the critical importance of lifestyle as a cause and resolution of disease; and Dr. Hammer’s remarkable insight into the ‘separation of yin and yang’ and ‘qi wild’ as disease processes throughout life. This book brings together, for the first time, the truly outstanding body of work that constitutes the main tenets of Contemporary Oriental Medicine. A rewarding read and an essential addition to the libraries of practitioners and students alike, Contemporary Oriental Medicine: Concepts will change the modern world of Chinese medicine.

Reviews

“Dr. Leon Hammer’s book is an extraordinary event for practitioners and students of Oriental Medicine. It captures Dr. Hammer’s 65 years of experience in both Western and Oriental medicine, combining his clinical skill with profound philosophical and psychological insight. Leon Hammer has been a beacon for practitioners for many decades. Now we have, as a monumental addition to an extraordinary career, access to his deepest thoughts regarding the study and practice of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Hammer, in unique fashion, elucidates and celebrates this profound and ancient approach to health, disease, and healing.”

“This is a must-read book for both students and practitioners of Chinese medicine. In Contemporary Oriental Medicine: Concepts, Dr. Leon Hammer meets the needs of both logical, linear thought, and of the right brain, with its evolved, conscious knowing. People come to us for solutions to their suffering, and Dr. Hammer reveals the ideal resolutions and approaches to the problems of individual patients. Critically, this book teaches practitioners how to treat the modern patient. I was pleasantly surprised that some chapters took me on a personal spiritual journey, and challenged me to raise my own conscious awareness so I can better ‘see’ my patients. By studying this text, you will gain incredible confidence in your diagnostic skills; this is vital for a successful treatment approach. Your practice will be transformed, and you personally will evolve from acupuncture technician to superior physician by reading and applying the wisdom and experience that Dr. Hammer shares in this comprehensive text.”

“Leon Hammer is one of the great practitioners of Chinese medicine of our age. In Contemporary Oriental Medicine: Concepts, Dr. Hammer generously shares with us the richness of his vast clinical experience. He teaches a living medicine: rooted in history, and flowering in the present. He elucidates a profound care for the highest medicine, for those of us who aspire to practice it, and for our patients. This is a book on the cultivation of humanity in a clinical context that will inspire students and seasoned practitioners alike to dig deeper in service of the calling to be a healer.”

Gorgeous Color!
Color: Coffee, Color: Coffee
I am very happy with the color of this purse the inside pockets and zipped pockets, a total of 4, allows for neat organization of all my items such as phone, cosmetics, sunglasses, tissues, perfume, mints and etc... I love the gun metal colored hardware. The zippers move smoothly. The crossbody strap is long enough for my 6' frame and sits right at my hip when I use the last buckle hole. All the stitching is complete and tight. Speaking of stitching, I removed a star because the inside pockets are sewn on and shows on the back of the purse. I don't like having to check if my purse is facing the right way. For the price of this purse the stitching should not be showing. The interior lining is a cloth-like fabric. The inside zipped pockets are full size and lay on top of each other. This is different from what I've seen in other purses. When the purse is full, the top pocket slightly covers the main compartment bottom from view. I will be sure to put something somewhat flat in that pocket to avoid this. There is no offensive odor from shipping. Because of the stitching issue, I cannot recommend to others without point this out.

Doctor Doctor-give me the news!!! This purse is…
Color: Black, Color: Black
Amazing!!! This is an updated review because the seller sent me a replacement. I use this bag for photography. It’s easy to reach into and set down as needed. There’s room for one body and two lenses and multiple accessories. I use a wrist grip and do street photography. I don’t like to carry my camera around my neck and draw attention. This bag is perfect for keeping my camera in between shots. The bags interior is super soft and the leather itself on the outside feels high-quality and is stitched very well. Being footed is an extra great quality so that I feel confident setting it down. The extra long strap is great, as a large bag like this needs to be worn as a crossbody for most people I upgraded to a wide strap for the weight of my camera system. I always update my reviews in a year. So I will come back and let you know how it’s holding up! (Old review) ***********Arrived with someone else’s complaint already prepared for me! What an entrance!! She was right, the tag and bag don’t match. It is the bag I ordered but…. VERY VERY DAMAGED!!! For this much money, where is the quality control? Someone else’s return, and multiple gauges throughout the leather of the bag? I uploaded about 5 different places where the leather is gauged-and then stopped photographing. Sadly, I think this is a good bag - a bit overpriced, and small, the zipper is iffy as well but clearly the bag isn’t a keeper in this condition. Shame on the seller.

Versatile small tote
Perfect for use as a larger purse or a small tote. I carry a very minimalist/tiny purse, so this bag is the perfect day bag for me. Fits my purse, water bottle, tablet, sunglasses, and pretty much whatever else I need to throw in. I was pleasantly surprised by how well designed the interior of this bag is in terms of different compartments/pockets to organize your stuff. The canvas fabric is substantial. I have machine washed it (in a lingerie bag and then and dried flat) and it came out great. I would absolutely buy again (and will if it’s still available when my current one wears out!).

My favorite bag
I was looking for a moderately sized bag with shoulder straps, pockets for organization, and a rigid bottom. I needed it to be just right, in a very specific way, and this more than meets my expectations. This has a great pocket on the back with a heavy duty zipper that's just right for a wallet or a phone. It's got a couple of zippered inner pockets, one of which is part of a separator that divides the bag almost in half. There are open pockets on the other side that are large enough for a sunglasses case or maybe a water bottle. You could easily put books, food, makeup, diapers, whatever you need in this bag. It's heavy duty, easy to organize, and sleek to carry. I've been carrying it daily for several weeks and it has shown literally no signs of wear. It's in excellent shape, although I've been stuffing it full and schlepping it everywhere. I can't recommend this bag too highly if you want a heavy duty, medium sized, minimal looking bag, with tons of organization options. It's my favorite bag, hands down, and think it will last me many years.
