Why You'll Love It

The Zyven Emerald Matrix Studs are the most geometric piece in our emerald collection — a 3.5mm square stud divided into four equal quadrants, two of which hold prong-set round lab-grown emeralds and two of which are solid polished gold, the emerald quadrants placed diagonally opposite each other so that the stud reads as a two-by-two grid with a diagonal axis of vivid green. The result is a stud that is simultaneously a piece of fine jewelry and a piece of graphic design: at arm's length it reads as a small square of green and gold; up close it reveals its four-quadrant grid, its two individual emeralds, and the precise geometry of its construction. At 3.5mm across, the Zyven Matrix is the smallest and most architectural piece in our earring collection — a stud that earns its place in the daily rotation through precision rather than scale.

Design Details

  • Dimensions: 3.5mm × 3.5mm per earring
  • Construction: Four-quadrant square grid — two emerald quadrants (diagonal), two solid gold quadrants
  • Setting: Prong-set round emeralds within recessed quadrant frames
  • Gold quadrants: Solid polished 14K gold, flush with emerald table surfaces
  • Closure: Flat-back (labret-style) — sits flush against the lobe, no butterfly
  • Available in: 14K Yellow Gold, 14K White Gold, 14K Rose Gold

The Matrix Grid

The four-quadrant grid of the Zyven Matrix is not decorative — it is structural. The square face of the stud is divided by two perpendicular rails into four equal square cells, each cell framed by the raised gold rails on two sides and the outer edge of the stud on the other two. Two of the four cells — the top-left and bottom-right — contain prong-set round emeralds, their vivid green faces flush with the top of the gold rails. The other two cells — the top-right and bottom-left — are solid polished gold, their surfaces at the same level as the emerald tables, creating a completely flat front face with a checkerboard-like alternation of green and gold. The diagonal placement of the emeralds gives the grid a rotational symmetry: the stud looks identical whether rotated 0° or 180°, and the diagonal axis of green reads as a deliberate compositional choice rather than a random arrangement.

Why a Flat-Back?

The flat-back closure — a labret-style disc that sits flush against the back of the lobe — is the most comfortable and most secure earring closure for small, lightweight studs. Unlike a butterfly back, which can shift and rotate during wear, the flat-back disc distributes pressure evenly across the lobe and holds the stud in a fixed orientation — important for a geometric piece like the Zyven Matrix, where the diagonal orientation of the emeralds is part of the design. The flat-back also sits closer to the lobe than a butterfly back, reducing the visible post length and giving the earring a cleaner, more minimal profile from the side.

Why Lab-Grown Emerald?

Lab-grown emeralds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural emeralds — the same crystal structure, the same refractive index, the same vivid green color — but grown in a controlled environment that produces stones with fewer inclusions, greater clarity, and greater consistency than most natural emeralds. In the Zyven Matrix, where the two emeralds per earring must be matched for color and size to maintain the symmetry of the grid, the consistency of lab-grown stones is essential: each pair of emeralds is selected to be identical in color and diameter, ensuring that the diagonal axis of green reads as a single, uniform field rather than two mismatched stones.

Styling Notes

The Zyven Matrix is the most stackable piece in our earring collection by virtue of its size and its geometry. Wear it alone in a first piercing for a clean, architectural look — the 3.5mm square reads as a graphic accent at the lobe. Stack it with a plain gold stud in a second piercing for a mixed-texture look. Layer it with the Zirelle Emerald Triad or the Elyra Emerald Drop in additional piercings for a full emerald ear that moves from geometric to organic as it travels up the lobe. The flat-back closure makes the Zyven Matrix especially comfortable for all-day wear and for sleeping — no butterfly back to press against the pillow.

Our Story

In our Queens atelier, the Zyven Matrix was designed as the most minimal expression of the emerald stud — a piece that reduces the emerald earring to its essential elements: stone, gold, geometry. The four-quadrant grid was chosen because it is the most efficient way to create a geometric composition in a 3.5mm square: four cells, two stones, one diagonal axis, infinite precision. Named for the mathematical concept of the matrix — a rectangular array of elements arranged in rows and columns — the Zyven Matrix is an earring for those who find beauty in structure.

Absolutely amazing! Must try.
I absolutely love this sponge!, it is so dense; it uses such a small amount of makeup but applies like a full coverage. I am using much less of my mineral makeup powder thanks to this sponge; plus it is easy to wash and dries quickly. Totally worth a try!

*update* Maybe(?) Perfect for those who hate eggs
Edit: Update It is with a heavy heart Im updating this review. When I said this sponge stains, I mean it really stains. Now to be fair it is marketed as a powder sponge and I use it with liquid so this my be entirely on the user (aka me) but it's like I can never get it clean. Between my repeated washing and the overall product build up the performance of this sponge went downhill quickly. The finish of my makeup suffered and the flocking took a beating. For what it's worth the sponge has not fallen apart and is still in one piece. But I get more of a 4 star finish than a 5 star finish. I've ended up using a large fluffy brush to buff out my foundation to get the desired result. I also ended up repurchasing the flocked flat ended egg from RT to replace this although at the moment I am still stubbornly using this sponge (and also avoiding doing my makeup) I do believe a lot of my issues are do to using this sponge with liquid foundation instead of power and that is on me. I'm finding it so very difficult to clean and the RT flocked egg cleans up so much easier. I don't hate this sponge but my lovefest has definitely taken a turn to more of a likefest. I am going to keep using (because I am stubborn like that) and see how long it takes to turn this relationship into a hatefest or fall apart completely, whichever happens first. I will most likely update again at that time. At this moment I am changing my review from 5 star to 4 star. I will be keeping my original review below. *original review* Yo I LOVE this thing. Ok here's the deal, I don't like the beauty blender, in fact I kinda hate it. Yea, I said it, I'm not on board with bouncing an egg all over my face, I think it's tedious and inefficient. I had at one time a flat teardrop shaped sponge that was my hands down favorite application tool for foundation. I used that thing until it literally fell apart. I tried to find a replacement but the store I had originally gotten it from no longer carried it so I kept using that ratty old sponge until it was missing chunks. I tried some other flat sponges but none worked as I wanted so I went back to brushes but I really hate cleaning foundation from brushes so I was pretty much hating my life. Then I found a flocked egg. Now I'm not a fan of the eggs but I was intrigued by the flocked texture and it had a nice flat edge so I tried it and it was almost as good as my old dearly missed flat teardrop sponge. I still was not a fan of bouncing an egg around on my face but I used this until the flocking wore off (about 6 months) Well, I saw this listing for a flat flocked sponge and I pounced on it. I am so incredibly deliriously happy with this little sponge. I love that it's flat and not an egg. I love the flocking. I love how it fits in my hand. I love love the finish I get with my foundation. I love it. Like I need to order a dozen more so I never run out and I'm trying to break my hoarding tendencies but for this tool I want to hoard. So the bad... It does stain easily. I wet my sponge before use and give it a quick clean after use. My old flocked egg would clean right up but this has stained on the first use. I also don't know how long this will hold up so I hope to update at a later time about that. Overall I couldn't be happier with this sponge.

Perfect for liquid
This sponge is not made for liquid but I use it for my liquid foundation. The sponge won't last as long when it gets wet but it still lasts a LONG time! I put a drop of water on sponge first then dab a few times on my arm to dry with only a slight hint of moisture left (very dry feeling)... then add a drop of makeup (literally). The coverage is awesome and your makeup last 2 to 3x as long. Flawless finish. Love it! I recently updated my review...I still have same awesome sponge. Now I also mix a silicone air brush liquid (clear) to the liquid makeup it spreads farther and the finish is wonderful. Great product stays dry and drys very quick after use.

Its OK, but not nearly as easy to use as videos and reviews make it seem.
I ordered this flocked sponge based on reviews and on watching JI videos of applying pure pressed powder with it. I tried it 'damp' and it was awful mess! I tried it dry, and no powder was transferring to my face at all. I'll stick with my ELF blurring brush to apply JI pressed foundation (which I love).
