What happens when you put a distinguished maritime historian and an accomplished naval architect together?

You get a model that’s not only beautifully designed, but historically faithful to her last line and fitting.

Erik A. R. Ronnberg, Jr., winner of the Harold Hahn Award by the Ship Modelers Association, whose models grace the halls of the SmithsonianMystic Seaport, and other important institutions, brought decades of deep research to the project. Every deck detail, every rigging choice, every sheer line was carefully cross-referenced with period photographs and Canadian shipbuilding practice.

Ben Lankford turned that scholarship into a build that flows beautifully. As a naval architect and author of How to Build First-Rate Ship Models from Kits, he led the design of the Bluenose kit’s structure. Drawing on years at the Naval Ship Engineering Center and collaborating with maritime experts, Lankford crafted plans that are solid, smart, and incredibly satisfying to bring to life.

by Model Expo - Plank-on-Bulkhead Kit

The schooner Bluenose was built in Nova Scotia in 1921 to fish the rough waters off the coast of Newfoundland. A salt banker type, she stayed out until her holds were full, using salt to preserve the catch. Bluenose was lost on a reef near Haiti in 1946, but an exact replica was launched in 1963.

Model Shipways' kit is the most authentic representation of any Bluenose available. And now, thanks to newly drawn plans and revised instruction book by Ben Lankford, it's ever more accurate and easier to build.

Plank-on-bulkhead construction uses laser cut basswood parts for a perfect fit. Flexible basswood strips are supplied for planking the hull. Fittings are true to the originals, and include wooden blocks and deadeyes, Brass ring and eyebolts, plus Britannia metal bilge pump, fife rail and anchors. Three diameters of rigging line and cotton sailcloth ensure an impressive model. (Display base with brass pedestals not included.)

Previous modeling experience helpful.

BRIEF HISTORY

Bluenose was a Canadian schooner from Nova Scotia, a celebrated racing ship and a symbol of the province. The name "bluenose" originated as a nick-name for Nova Scotians.

Designed by William Roué and built by Smith and Rhuland, Bluenose was launched at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on March 26, 1921, as both a working cod-fishing schooner and a racing ship. This was in response to a Nova Scotian ship's defeat in a race for working schooners established by the Halifax Herald newspaper in 1920.

After a season fishing on the Grand Banks, Bluenose defeated Elsie (out of Gloucester, Massachusetts), returning the trophy to Nova Scotia. During the next 17 years of racing, no challenger, American or Canadian, could wrest the trophy from her.

Fishing schooners became obsolete after World War II, and despite efforts to keep her in Nova Scotia, the undefeated Bluenose was sold to work as a freighter in the West Indies. She foundered on a Haitian reef on January 28, 1946.

Bluenose and her captain, Angus Walters, were inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1955. That same year another honour was bestowed upon the famous sailing ship when a new Canadian National Railways passenger-vehicle ferry for the inaugural Yarmouth-Bar Harbor service was launched as the M/V Bluenose.

Bluenose under full sail has adorned the Canadian dime since 1937, has been portrayed on a postage stamp, and appears on the current Nova Scotia licence plate.

Great Looking Shelf
Color: Brown, Size: 4Tier48in, Color: Brown, Size: 4Tier48in
I love this shelf! It took two people to hang it and you definitely want to ensure you hit a stud on at least one side or 1-2 screws if mounting between studs. It is heavy but a single person can lift it, just not maneuver easily due to its dimensions. It has a ton of room and fits mini helmets nicely in my office. Where I mounted it made it difficult to an extent to install but if you are even somewhat handy, you’ll be fine. You absolutely need a stud finder to hang this shelf. Sorry, I’m married! I would buy this shelf, or versions of it, again. Very practical and useful to display autographs, housewares or decor. Last note: do not over tighten the poles. The wood is soft and the poles are light weight. They are not traditional black pipe and weigh far less.

AWESOME Look and Quality
Color: Brown, Size: 2Tier60in
I love these shelves and have bought additional for other areas in the house. I love the look of the industrial pipes, the color of the shelves is perfect, they are sturdy and hold a lot of weight. They are somewhat difficult to assemble, but it's expected as hanging shelves are never fun to hang. I love them. If you are on the fence, just do it :)

Nice, but a bear to install
Color: Black, Size: 3Tier48in
Quality product that looks good on our shiplap wall of the wet bar space. The install was a real trip and extremely difficult. You definitely need 2 or more people to install as the direction tell you to put the entire item together, then hang on the wall. This makes it impossible to do yourself.
