Один з найвизначніших українських письменників Улас Самчук народився 1905 року. Творчість його була широко відома в українській діаспорі, а на початку ХХІ століття нарешті почала повертатися на батьківщину. Недарма зарубіжні дослідники називали його 'українським Гомером', вказуючи, що він відкрив світові досі невідому Україну. Самчук є автором шістнадцяти романів, серед яких трилогія 'Волинь', 'Гори говорять', 'Марія', 'Юність Василя Шеремети', 'Чого не гоїть огонь' та багатьох інших, низки повістей, оповідань і статей. Він одним з перших розповів світові про трагедію Голодомору 1932—1933 рр. У 1980-х роках навіть йшлося про висунення Уласа Самчука на Нобелівську премію, але, на жаль, справу так і не було довершено...
