Dandy's SpringMix Compost & Garden Mulch | Spring PlantingThere's a particular moment in late February or March when the garden begins to lift its head bulbs nosing through the soil, early perennials showing green at their bases, the soil itself starting to wake from its winter sleep. There's a particular moment in late February or March when the garden begins to lift its head — bulbs nosing through the soil, early perennials showing green at their bases, the soil itself starting to wake from its winter sleep. It's the moment to give the borders a proper spring kickstart, replacing the goodness leached by winter rain and laying down a nutrient-rich blanket for the season ahead. SpringMix from Dandy's is exactly that: a peat-free spring-refresh compost and mulch in one, properly blended for the post-winter rebuild.

From Dandy's Topsoil, our trusted bulk-supply partners — specialists in topsoils, mulches, composts and garden aggregates. Available in seven sizes from small handy bags right through to a full cubic-metre jumbo.

What's in it

SpringMix is a properly considered three-ingredient blend, designed specifically for spring use:

  • Rich black horse and chicken manure (spent mushroom compost) — the nutrient backbone of the mix, providing the proper plant-available feed that winter-stripped borders need. Well-rotted, easy to handle, traditionally one of the most effective garden enrichers
  • Composted bark mulch fines — for soil structure, slow breakdown into longer-term organic matter, and the slightly textured finish that holds together as a proper mulch rather than washing away in spring rain
  • Screened organic compost — the base that ties the mix together. Well-screened, friable, properly broken-down material

It's peat-free, as is the whole Dandy's range — Dandy's were 100% peat-free well before the law required it of retail composts, which it has from late 2024.

What it's for

SpringMix does the early-season jobs that get the garden off to a proper start:

  • Spring border mulch — the headline use. Spread 5–10cm thick over existing borders in late winter or early spring to feed the soil, suppress weeds emerging from the warming ground, and give your plants a generous nutrient boost as they wake up
  • Top-up around emerging perennials — mulch carefully around the crowns of perennials as they begin to grow, avoiding the soft new shoots themselves
  • Vegetable plot preparation — spread over the veg patch before sowing or planting; rake in lightly or leave on the surface for the worms to incorporate. Particularly good for hungry crops (brassicas, beans, leafy salads)
  • Soil improver for new beds — mixed into existing topsoil at a roughly 50:50 ratio when preparing new beds for spring planting
  • Around fruit trees and bushes — an annual spring mulched ring (kept clear of the trunk) feeds the tree and suppresses competing weeds at the critical growing-season start
  • Raised bed top-ups — raised beds settle through the year; a spring top-up replaces volume and freshens the nutrient profile
  • Lawn edge replenishment — lightly worked into thin lawn margins where the grass has weakened, before re-seeding

SpringMix and AutumnMix — the seasonal pair

If you've used our AutumnMix, you'll notice SpringMix is its natural sister product. The two work as a year-round pair:

  • AutumnMix (used September to December) — heavier blend with sand for drainage and a 6-month slow-release feed. Built for bulb planting, autumn-winter mulching, and pre-loading the soil for the cold months
  • SpringMix (used February to May) — gentler blend focused on quick post-winter nutrient delivery and structural refresh. Built for waking borders up rather than tucking them in

Together they give you the two big mulching sessions of the gardening year — the autumn tuck-in and the spring kickstart — and the soil benefits accumulate season on season into properly fertile, properly structured ground.

When to use it

SpringMix is ideal from February through to May — from the first sign of soil warming through to early summer:

  • February — an early mulch before bulbs come fully through, while the soil is still bare. Frost-protective and slow-feeding as the plants begin to wake
  • March and April — the prime application window. Borders are visible, perennials are showing growth, you can work around them without trampling
  • May — later applications work for fast-growing summer crops (beans, courgettes, tomatoes) being planted out into prepared beds

Avoid mulching when the soil is still waterlogged or frozen — spring is best timed for a few days after the ground has dried out enough to walk on without compacting it.

Choosing your bag size

Available in seven sizes:

  • Jumbo Bulk Bag — approximately 1000 litres (one cubic metre) — the largest, and the genuine best-value per litre
  • Standard Bulk Bag — approximately 750 litres — the size most builders' merchants use
  • Half Bulk Bag — approximately 500 litres
  • 40 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 1000 litres in carry-friendly bags
  • 20 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 500 litres
  • 10 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 250 litres
  • 5 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 125 litres — for a single project or a few raised beds

The bulk bags are properly the best value if you have space for a pallet drop-off. The handy bags are the answer if you have access difficulties — narrow path, steps, an upstairs flat — since each 25-litre bag can be carried by hand.

About Dandy's

Dandy's are our trusted bulk-supply partners — a long-established Welsh family business specialising in topsoils, mulches, composts and garden aggregates, supplied direct in bulk and handy bags. We stock their range because they do the unglamorous bulk products properly: well-screened materials, honest descriptions, sensible bag sizes for both serious gardeners and small projects. And because they made the move to 100% peat-free composts long before the law required it.

A small thought: spring mulching is one of the unsung garden labours that quietly transforms what's possible the rest of the year. Borders mulched generously in March develop the deep, dark, properly fertile soil that pays back fivefold by August — bigger flowers, better crops, healthier plants, fewer weeds. SpringMix doesn't promise miracles; it just provides the proper material for the proper job at the proper time of year.

Vader when he still is Anakin
Format: Paperback
This comic picks up right where Episode III left off. Like directly. There's the whole "Noooooooooo" thing and everything. I liked seeing Vader when he is new to being a Sith. It really is Anakin under there still. Throughout the comic, that Anakin begins to fall away. I liked the mix of prequel and original trilogy aesthetic. Seeing Vader alongside clone troopers was very cool. The Grand Inquisitor even makes a cameo! I read the Dark Horse comics that took place right after Order 66 so certain aspects of this comic remind me of those. In this comic, there are jedi who took the Barash Vow prior to the Purge, so they are still out and about in the galaxy. Vader takes this opportunity to take a lightsaber and make it bleed. I really enjoyed this first volume in a new, ongoing comic series. I am absolutely excited for volume two. I give this volume a 5/5.

The Lord Vader Treatment
Format: Kindle
Love this Darth perspective. It potentially fills in some gaps in the timeline in the beginning of his transition. Loved the humor and the art.

Wow!
Format: Kindle
I choose my rating because the art is so cool! Each frame brought a unique angle and showed the brilliance of color and texture! Also, I do have great memories of this movie. The surprise and fun it brought. Also Luke’s point of view was quite interesting. This was a remarkable read, however I skipped some parts more quickly than others. Enjoyed the story in this medium!

Whatever…
Format: Paperback
The worst in the series until they come out with a Rise of Skywalker one… heaven forbid! Still, decent art. Better than the actual movie. 😂

It is not so accurate.
Format: Paperback
Well, this is feedback by my son. My son loves Star Wars and I bought it for him and he read it almost immediately! I knew he would love it, and he did! He loved the artwork and the way the author drew the characters. But he didn’t like one thing. Here’s what my son said: I don’t like how they cut a lot of stuff out from the movie and made it short. They cut a lot of FN-2187s fight with phasma. And I don’t like how the author cut the battle on Crait very short! But, then again, the story was very accurate to the movie.” I know many people like Star Wars, but if your planning on buying this comic, I would think twice. It leaves out some pretty big parts of the movie.I think this deserved four stars.
