Gem avocados are renowned for their rich and creamy texture, making them a favorite among avocado enthusiasts. Their semi-compact and vase-shaped tree structure makes them ideal for small gardens or limited spaces, while their delectable flavor adds an irresistible appeal to any culinary creation. Here’s a comprehensive guide on growing Gem avocado trees, from planting to harvesting:
Due to hot summer temperatures, we have temporarily suspended tree shipments to the states of NM, TX, OK, NV and AZ. Shipping to these states will resume in the fall once temperatures subside to levels consistent with safe healthy tree shipment. Shipments to other states will require expedited shipping during the summer months. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we prioritize the protection of your order.
Selection of Planting Site:
- Gem avocado trees thrive in warm climates, ideally USDA zones 9–11, although they can also be grown in large containers indoors in colder regions.
- Choose a location with well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging, as avocados are susceptible to root rot. Ensure the site receives full sunlight for optimal growth and fruit production.
Planting Process:
- Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball of the avocado tree.
- Gently remove the tree from its container, being careful not to disturb the roots excessively.
- Place the tree in the center of the hole and backfill with soil, pressing down firmly to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.
Watering and Maintenance:
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the tree's establishment phase.
- Mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer formulated for fruit trees, following package instructions.
- Prune the tree annually to maintain its shape and remove dead or diseased branches.
Pollination Requirements:
- Gem avocado trees are Type A and typically require a Type B avocado tree nearby for cross-pollination, especially in most climates.
- Ensure there is a compatible pollinator tree within close proximity to maximize fruit set.
Fruit Development and Harvesting:
- Gem avocados do not ripen on the tree. Instead, they mature and darken after harvesting.
- Monitor the fruit as it matures; ripe avocados will yield slightly to gentle pressure.
- Harvest time typically spans from mid-spring through early fall, depending on the climate.
- Once harvested, allow the avocados to ripen at room temperature until they reach the desired level of softness.
Pest and Disease Management:
- Keep an eye out for common avocado pests such as aphids, mites, and scales. Regular inspection can help catch infestations early.
- Practice good sanitation by removing fallen leaves and debris to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
- Consider using organic or chemical control methods if pest or disease pressure becomes significant.
Considerations for Container Growing:
- If growing Gem avocados in containers, choose a large pot with ample drainage holes.
- Use a well-draining potting mix designed for container-grown trees.
- Provide regular water and nutrients, as container plants may dry out more quickly than those planted in the ground.
Growing Gem avocado trees can be a rewarding endeavor, yielding a bountiful harvest of rich and creamy avocados. By providing the right growing conditions, proper care, and attention to pollination requirements, you can enjoy the delectable fruits of your labor from mid-spring through early fall.
These trees, measured from the top of the root ball, are 18–36” tall, with a trunk diameter between 1/4–1/2 inch. The trees are 12–18 months old and should start bearing fruit in their 5th year. They are planted in a 5x12" growers pot. Within a month of delivery we suggest repotting into a larger (10"–12" diameter) container or planting directly in the ground.
