A principios del siglo XIII y aniquilados los cátaros, sólo dos gnosis revestían verdadera importancia: el hermetismo, que seguía siendo una gnosis grecoegipcia, y la cábala, una gnosis hebraica. En este contexto apareció el Tarot, como gnosis gráfica que realiza la simbiosis de las anteriores formulando, a través de sus símbolos, un cuerpo doctrinal que encierra el saber oculto de la Antigüedad. En el terreno adivinatorio, el Tarot no es más que una base material para ampliar nuestras facultades y captar «algo» que viene con el consultante. Si bien en un principio el significado de los arcanos debería ser el mismo para todo el mundo, al igual que sucede con los arquetipos simbólicos de los sueños, cada cual lo adapta inconsciente y paulatinamente a su personalidad profunda, y de este modo va creando sus propios arquetipos y su propia interpretación de los arcanos.
