If you've ever come downstairs on a summer morning to find your lawn looking like it's been visited by a small landscaping disaster — turf flipped over, holes scratched into the surface, soil scattered across the grass — you've probably already met the chafer grub. Or rather, you've met the foxes, badgers, crows or magpies who've worked out that there are chafer grubs in your lawn, and have spent the night excavating them with great enthusiasm and zero regard for your gardening.

The chafer grub itself does some of the damage — chewing the grass roots from below — but the secondary havoc caused by hungry wildlife digging for them is often far more visible and distressing. Treating the grubs reduces both the root damage and (crucially) the reason wildlife are tearing your lawn apart.

This is the gentle answer. Microscopic beneficial nematodes — naturally occurring soil organisms — that target chafer larvae specifically, while leaving the rest of your garden ecosystem completely undisturbed. From Ladybird Plant Care, our trusted suppliers of biological controls — chosen because they help us work with the garden rather than against it.

What chafer grubs do

Chafer larvae are the C-shaped white grubs of various chafer beetle species (most commonly the garden chafer and the cockchafer in UK lawns). They live just below the surface of the lawn, feeding on grass roots through summer and autumn before pupating and emerging as adult beetles the following spring.

The damage shows up in two ways:

  • Direct damage — patches of grass that look yellow, sparse or dead, with the turf becoming loose enough to lift away easily. The roots have simply been eaten through
  • Wildlife damage — and this is usually the dramatic part. Foxes, badgers, crows, magpies, jackdaws and starlings all know that chafer-affected lawns are dinner. They'll scratch, dig, peel back turf and excavate enthusiastically. A serious infestation followed by a hungry fox visit can leave a previously lovely lawn looking properly destroyed

Treating the grubs deals with both problems. With no chafer larvae to find, the wildlife move on to other gardens, and your lawn is left to recover.

How nematodes work

The nematodes in this pack are microscopic beneficial roundworms that target chafer larvae specifically. Mixed with water and applied to the lawn, they move down through the moist soil to find the grubs, infect them, and end the larval stage of the life cycle. The grass roots stay safe; the wildlife find nothing to dig for.

Crucially, they're completely safe for everything else: bees, butterflies, ladybirds, earthworms, birds, pets, children, garden plants. The targeting is genuinely specific — these nematodes evolved alongside their host species and don't affect anything else living in the soil.

When to treat — timing matters

Chafer treatment timing is more nuanced than some other biological controls. There are two windows worth knowing about:

  • Late summer (typically August–early October) — the ideal treatment window. The grubs that hatched earlier in the year are still small and shallow, making them most vulnerable to nematode infection. Soil is usually warm enough and moist enough for nematodes to work effectively
  • Spring (typically April–May) — a secondary window if you've discovered grub damage in spring before the larvae pupate. Less effective than autumn treatment because the grubs are larger and tougher, but worth doing if your lawn is actively suffering

Soil temperature must be reliably above 12°C for the nematodes to be effective. Apply too early in spring or too late in autumn and they simply won't have the warmth they need to find their hosts.

A note on honest expectations: autumn treatment is significantly more effective than spring. If you're choosing between treating in May or waiting until August/September, the autumn application will give you a far better result. But if your lawn is being destroyed in May and you can't bear to wait, some treatment is better than none.

How to apply

Full instructions come with the pack, but in short:

  • Water the lawn thoroughly the day before treatment — nematodes need moist soil to move through
  • Mix the nematodes with water following the pack guidance
  • Apply with a watering can (rose removed) evenly across the affected area — or with a hose-end applicator for larger lawns
  • Water the lawn again immediately after application to wash the nematodes down into the soil where the grubs are
  • Keep the lawn moist for 1–2 weeks after treatment — this is the most important part. If the soil dries out, the nematodes can't work

Apply on an overcast day or in the cool of evening rather than the heat of midday. Direct strong sunlight is the one thing nematodes really don't tolerate.

Ordering and despatch

Because these are live biological controls, we don't keep them on standing stock — they're ordered in fresh from Ladybird Plant Care so they reach you as effective as possible.

  • Order by 10am Monday for despatch the same week
  • Orders placed after 10am Monday will despatch the following week
  • Not sold during colder months — when soil temperatures are below 12°C, the nematodes can't work, so we pause supply during winter rather than send a product that won't help

Worth bearing in mind when planning your treatment — give yourself a few days' grace, and check soil temperature before ordering if you're at the edges of the season.

What else helps

Nematodes are the most effective intervention, but a few additional habits help reduce chafer problems and recover damaged lawns:

  • Aerate the lawn in autumn — well-drained, healthy turf supports stronger root systems that better tolerate grub damage
  • Top-dress with compost or sandy loam on damaged areas — encourages quicker recovery
  • Overseed bare patches in late summer or early autumn after treatment
  • Don't overwater in summer — chafer adults prefer moist lawns for laying eggs, so very wet conditions in early summer can encourage them
  • Tolerate a slightly less perfect lawn — small numbers of chafer grubs are normal, and a healthy lawn copes with them. Treatment is needed when populations reach damaging levels rather than as routine

The combination of nematodes for the larvae, healthy lawn management, and patience through one growing season usually returns a damaged lawn to good condition.

About Ladybird Plant Care

Ladybird Plant Care are specialists in biological pest controls — gentle, naturally-derived solutions for problems that have traditionally been tackled with chemicals. We stock their range because their approach mirrors our own: work with the garden, not against it, and trust the wider ecosystem to find its own balance.

A note on managing expectations: nematode treatment works gradually. You won't see dramatic results overnight — what you'll notice over the following weeks is that wildlife stop digging, the affected patches stop spreading, and the lawn slowly starts recovering as the grass roots regrow. By the following spring, with some overseeding and patience, most chafer-damaged lawns return to good condition. The work happens quietly, beneath the surface, exactly as it should.

Best for a large PC case, works on smaller towers with mods
This thing is solid! I strongly recommend setting your tower on it to get a feel for the orientation you want before attaching it to your desk or wall. I had to re-mount mine because I had it positioned too far back to be able to plug cables into the PC tower. When the ad says its for a large PC tower they are not joking. I would consider my PC case to be a fairly average size but the bottom clamp and side arms don't hold my case at all. Theres a z shaped bracket included to attach to the main support and let it contact the desk or wall surface behind it. I used this part to wedge between the bottom clamp snd my PC case to hold it in place. My mount is still very sturdy without that bracket in place. I cheated during install and stacked some books under it to bring it up to the height of the bottom of my desk, made easy work of it. I really want to give it 5 stars but unfortunately the fitment issue leaves me hanging, literally. Maybe I will update my rig and get a larger PC case down the road. What I love about this item is my tower used to be on my desktop. Now its tucked away neatly and I was able to separate my 2 monitors more. Feels like a whole new workspace with less clutter and more table space for projects. Good item.

Attractive design+color, slender profile, excellent functionality, budget price (8 outlet model)
Color: Black, Size: 8 Outlet, Style: Outlets Only, Color: Black, Size: 8 Outlet, Style: Outlets Only
This is exactly what I wanted. (It’s even better - slimmer, easier to handle cord, than the Belkin in this design style.) Perfect fit for the lower shelf of my night table. To charge my phone, iPad, Bluetooth headset, and the like (plug my lamp into it as well, for convenience-sake not surge protection). The 8 outlets are perfectly spaced/placed. I briefly considered the model with the USB cord plugs directly into the unit, but for me, at this point, for this purpose the extra price didn’t seem worth-it. My USB charging adapters aren’t that bulky, and with this design they can be plugged side-by-side. I do like the convenience of that design, with the USB plugs, and will likely get it in the future, and move this one to either my home-office, or dressing area. So, this “basic” one wouldn’t be wasted. And meanwhile it’s a great budget option that sacrifices none of the design, style, or function. It’s attractive, useful, well conceived/designed and executed. For well under $20. Nice color too. Would be perfect anyplace. Though I’d think this more basic model isn’t intended for multiple multimedia devises all in one - looked like they had more suitable models for if you wanted to say plug in your TV, your game console, your streaming and/or cable - do they still call it that? - box/devise, your speakers with or without subwoofer, along with your modem and WiFi-router all into one. Someone, who works with high end electronics and/or an electrician/engineer correct me if I’m wrong. But I’d get a model - of this same device if there’s one of suitable capacity - which that’s meant to handle such a load for my entertainment center. I think another reviewer talked about joules and capacity, I think it was for this model. Or at least this manufacturer. Though I don’t see it being convenient for travel - not sure about that question there, maybe more convenient than some other styles; certainly not anywhere that’s not 120V, and I doubt that at this level it’s sufficient protection for anywhere with radically irregular electrical/voltage supply, not just the occasional spike, like say - Malawi Africa for a random example out of personal experience, for something like that you’d actually have to spend money and get a proper UPC, not to mention bulky-bulky, but that’s not relevant here, for this, just this isn’t something like that. This is for use with stable electrical and voltage supply, should give perfectly adequate protection for the occasional spikes and surges such as those following a power outage, within the design specification.

Excellent value from a reliable & known brand
Color: Black, Size: 8 Outlet, Style: Outlets Only
I've always bought surge suppressors and the like from APC. They're very reliable and well-made. The equipment protection guarantees are great, too. This strip is not as sturdy as some other APC strips, but it is also less expensive. Perfect for basic home use (a TV, Xbox, etc). I'd get a higher up APC model if you're protecting a workstation computer or high end audio gear. But for basic stuff, this strip is a good value. I'd trust this far more than a lesser known brand.

APC is a trusted brand - this guy is beautifully thought out!
Color: Black, Size: 8 Outlet, Style: Outlets Only
It's hard to get excited about a power strip- but when they designed this one, the engineers at APC hit it out of the park! I love how the 'wall warts' (those odd klunky AC/DC power adapters that so many devices come with nowadays) have their own spot on this unit, and do not block out the remaining plugs that regular AC power cords (3 prong grounded) require. This is VERY important! Most of the competition has you forfeiting one or more plug locations when a wall wart blocks you out! There are on/off status lights (green means OK) and and on/off SWITCH. For the modest and reasonable cost, you get great surge protection. I have used APC products for many years, particularly fond of their backup UPS power supplies. I plan to buy more of this model for my apartment. The quality is there, a nice heavy line cord to connect to the AC power, and better-than-average build quality. Slick!
