Organic Inchelium Red Garlic is a classic softneck variety treasured for its mild flavor, excellent storage capacity, and beautiful red-tinged wrappers. This heirloom garlic originated on the Colville Indian Reservation in Inchelium, Washington, and has been celebrated for generations. Each large bulb yields 10–20 smooth cloves with a creamy, mellow flavor that deepens when roasted—making it a favorite among home cooks and chefs alike.

Ideal for fall planting, this softneck variety matures by midseason and stores exceptionally well into the following year. Inchelium Red is easy to grow in a range of climates and soil types and produces dependable yields of large, slightly flattened bulbs. With its well-balanced flavor and attractive appearance, it’s an excellent addition to any garden or garlic-growing plan—especially for those new to garlic cultivation.

Inchelium Red seed garlic is especially prized for its versatility in the kitchen and its graceful garden performance. Whether you’re looking to grow a flavorful variety for everyday use or seeking long-storage bulbs for extended culinary use, this heirloom delivers. Expect rich harvests, reliable clove formation, and exceptional flavor from this mild yet complex garlic cultivar.

  • Softneck Artichoke Garlic.
  • Perfect for beginner or seasoned growers alike.
  • Mild and creamy flavor with subtle heat and sweetness.
  • Bulbs have red-tinged clove skins and white outer wrappers.
  • 10–20 easy-to-peel cloves per bulb.
  • Fall planting recommended; adaptable to multiple climates.
  • Well-suited for fertile, well-drained soil; harvest in midseason.

Flavor and Aroma Profile

  • Flavor Profile: Inchelium Red garlic offers a smooth, mellow flavor with mild heat and a touch of sweetness. This softneck variety becomes creamy and buttery when roasted, making it perfect for everything from roasted vegetables to spreads and sauces. It also delivers enough complexity when raw to enhance dressings, salsas, and fresh dishes.

  • Aroma Profile: When crushed or chopped, Inchelium Red emits a gentle, warming garlic aroma with a subtle pungency. Its scent intensifies during cooking, releasing a savory richness that deepens stews, sautés, and slow-cooked meals without overpowering more delicate ingredients.

Planting Time

This garlic is best planted in the fall for a summer harvest. Planting 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes allows cloves to establish strong root systems, resulting in vigorous plants and full-sized bulbs by midseason. Inchelium Red can also be spring-planted in milder climates but yields are generally better with fall planting.

Scaping

Unlike hardneck garlic, Inchelium Red is a softneck variety and typically does not produce a flowering scape. This allows all the plant’s energy to focus on bulb development, contributing to its large size and long storage life. Softneck garlic varieties like Inchelium Red are also ideal for garlic braiding after harvest due to their pliable stalks.

Storage and Preservation

How to Store Fresh Garlic

After harvesting in midsummer, allow the green tops to dry completely and turn brown to ensure proper curing. Hang or lay out the softneck bulbs in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space to extend storage life. Once cured, Inchelium Red stores for several months—retaining its flavor and nutritional quality well into winter and beyond.

Preserving Garlic for Long-Term Use

For optimal long-term use, harvest when the lower leaves have browned and a few green leaves remain. Cure thoroughly in a shaded, breezy area for 2–3 weeks. This heirloom variety’s mild and smooth flavor holds well in storage, making it ideal for pantry staples like garlic powder, oil infusions, or daily cooking needs.

Best Practices for Drying and Freezing

Once fully cured, garlic can be frozen for even longer storage. Freeze as whole bulbs, peeled cloves, or chopped/minced portions to suit your cooking style. Avoid freezing fresh (uncured) garlic—its moisture content can lead to mushy texture and flavor loss. Proper curing preserves the integrity and mild, rich character of Inchelium Red Garlic for extended use.

Treasure!! The best!!
I had been using Avene Compensating cream for years before it was reformulated and renamed as “Revitalizing” in (as I remember) 2020. At the time, every single comment I saw complained about its pilling and its getting worse after reformulation. Every single comment wished for the old formulation back. Because Avene Compensating was PERFECT for me, I got very anxious after reading the comments and decided not to purchase the new Revitalizing cream. I jumped around from products to products for the last 2 years (from expensive La Mer cream, Cle de peau La Creme, Lancome soft cream, Amorepacific Time Response to less expensive Clarins Hydra, Embryolisse). Nothing beat Avene Compensating cream. Nothing came close to Avene Compensating cream in terms of giving my easily irritated skin that clear, well moisturized, trouble-free, healthful look. Fast forward to the week of Thanksgiving 2022 after I got back from a Las Vegas trip with terribly dry and dehydrated reddish skin that nothing helped (and I always use sheet masks daily), I decided to give Avene Revitalizing a try. Worst case scenario, I would waste my $40 that I, very likely, would otherwise waste on another non Avene moisturizer. I’m so grateful I gave it a try. I don’t know if Avene listened to its loyal customers and brought the old formulation back, or if they improved the new formulation that pilled, but the Avene Revitalizing cream (I tried both rich and regular versions) did not pill at all for me and as far as I can still remember, Avene Compensating cream felt the same to me. After 2 nights of Avene Revitalizing, my skin is pretty much back to normal now. I think this is the old formulation but I can’t say for sure because it was more than 2 years ago when I last used the cream, but no matter what, if it keeps being what it is now, I will be a customer for life. Please Avene. Don’t change formulation again.
