One of the most regal names in the history of Scotland, also spelled "Stuart," and descended from the French. The clan originated from a Norman knight who received territories in East Lothian and Renfreshire under the reign of David 1 in 1124–1153, and the Royal House of Stewart dynasty was established by the union of one of his descendants with a daughter of Robert the Bruce.
