What axle bearing caps do

The IRS rear suspension uses a sealed wheel bearing at the outer end of each axle, retained by a steel cap that bolts to the trailing arm. The cap holds the bearing in place against axle loads and keeps the assembly sealed against road grime and water. Factory caps are functional plain steel that rust, pit, and corrode over decades — and they're highly visible on a car with deep-dish or polished wheels.
