Description
Murasaki is one of Japan’s most ancient and revered natural dyes, derived from the roots of Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Used since the Nara period (710–794 CE), it produces extraordinary purples that were once considered a “forbidden color” (kinjiki), reserved for the Imperial family and the highest-ranking officials.

These dried roots yield a spectrum from soft lilacs to deep imperial purples, depending on pH and mordant. More than just a dye, murasaki represents the aesthetics of classical Japan, where purple embodied nobility, refinement, and spiritual depth.

Historical Note
In ancient Japanese court culture, purple garments signified status and authority. The painstaking process of dyeing with murasaki ( requiring delicate cold extractions and skillful handling)  made it one of the rarest and most prestigious colors of the Heian and Edo periods. The plant was also prized in traditional medicine, and its pigment continues to be studied today for its unique chemistry.

Active Dye Components

  • Shikonin
  • Acetylshikonin

CI Colour Name
Closest family: CI Natural Violet 1

Shading Tips

  • Alum mordant: lilac to mid purples
  • Alkaline extraction: deep violets and bluish purples
  • Iron mordant: sombre grey-purples and eggplant tones
  • Overdye with indigo: rich, near-black purples
  • Sensitive to pH shifts — slight acidity gives redder hues, alkalinity pushes bluer tones

Light fastness: moderate — handle with care, avoid prolonged sun exposure.

This is a nice mat for floor exercises.
Color: Aqua, Style: 1-Inch
I had some lower back issues and went to physical therapy. I used this mat for my floor stretches and exercises at home along with my big rubber ball. It made the floor work so much more comfortable. Beware of the smell. When I unroll it I still smell that “memory foam” odor, which takes some getting used to. I aired it out as instructed, twice, and it persists. It’s a wonderful mat so the odor is not a deal breaker. I’d buy it again.

Love my mat!
Color: Pink, Style: 1/2 Inch
I’m new to stretching and recovery classes, and there is a lot of floor work. I was using the gym mats, but my knees, lower back, and glutes were hurting from being on the floor. This mat is the perfect thickness and feels wonderful during floor exercises. It gives me the extra cushion I need without being difficult to use. It’s also lightweight, durable, easy to clean, and easy to roll up for transport. The pink makes me smile. That said , the mat makes the classes more enjoyable.

Perfect exercise mat. It is nice and thick, and comfortable to kneel and lay on. Can't comment on durability, but so far, so good. Recommended.

Thick, soft, perfect for my service dog to lay on in restaurants, etc.
Color: Blue, Style: 1/2 Inch
I bought this for my service dog to lay on in restaurants, etc. It's super thick and soft. I cut it in half and I'm using the other half for my dog to lay on in the car. Excellent quality and I love the carry strap.

Comfortable and thick mat that’s great for workouts at home
Color: Black, Style: 1/2 Inch, Color: Black, Style: 1/2 Inch
I picked up this Amazon Basics extra thick exercise mat for home workouts, and it’s been a solid addition. The thickness is the first thing you notice—it provides good cushioning, especially for exercises where you’re on your knees, elbows, or back. The surface has enough grip to keep you from slipping during most movements, whether you're doing stretching, core work, or basic workouts. It also stays in place pretty well on the floor without sliding around too much. The mat rolls out flat easily and comes with a strap, which makes it convenient to store or carry if needed. It’s lightweight enough to move around but still feels durable. It’s not a high-end studio mat, but for everyday workouts at home, it does exactly what you need it to do. Pros: • Extra thickness provides good cushioning • Comfortable for floor exercises • Lightweight and easy to store • Good value for the price Cons: • Slight compression over time with heavy use • Grip is good but not premium-level Overall, this is a great budget-friendly mat for home workouts, stretching, or basic fitness routines.
