Maintaining erectile function is a major concern for sexually active men after prostate cancer and contributes significantly to their quality of life and enjoyment of life. Studies (1-3) show that early use of a vacuum pump leads to a full erection in 80% of patients. In addition, improved healing outcomes and shorter periods of incontinence are observed.

Why is corpus cavernosum training so important?

A long-term reduction in the oxygen supply to the corpus cavernosum (erectile tissue) of the penis is a key factor in the development of erectile dysfunction (ED). In healthy corpus cavernosum of the penis, the ratio of muscle to connective tissue is 50:50. If the proportion of smooth muscle decreases, the blood flowing in during stimulation can no longer be retained in the corpus cavernosum, making an erection impossible! Therefore, blood circulation-promoting measures should be initiated as soon as possible after a prostatectomy or pelvic surgery. This improves the oxygen supply to the blood vessels and trains the smooth muscles of the corpus cavernosum. A good oxygen supply counteracts changes in the tissue composition of the corpus cavernosum of the penis, as well as a reduction in penis length and girth. Penile vacuum training can replace medication-based corpus cavernosum training.

How does the Rehabi vacuum trainer work?

The penis is inserted into the open end of the cylinder. Leverage is applied to create a vacuum in the cylinder. This should be noticeable after 20-25 pumping movements. The vacuum causes blood to flow into the corpus cavernosum and the glans. This creates an artificial erection. This erection must be maintained for several minutes. The penis remains in the cylinder during this time. For rehabilitation, cavernous body training should be performed several times a day for several months to improve the arterial blood supply.
