What it's used for
- Nosing stair treads where a softened hardwood edge reduces wear and improves safety
- Finishing exposed external corner joints on oak panelling, dado work, or fitted furniture
- Covering and protecting corner edges on hardwood flooring installations
- Providing a neat transition between two meeting surfaces on joinery projects where a square edge would be too sharp
Fitting and handling
Allow the moulding to acclimatise in the room where it will be fitted for at least 48 hours before fixing, keeping it flat and away from direct heat sources. Fix using a combination of construction adhesive and lost-head oval nails or a brad nailer, punching heads below the surface and filling with a tinted oak filler before sanding flush. Finish with your choice of hardwax oil, Danish oil, or clear lacquer to protect the grain and bring out the natural colour of the white oak.
FAQ
What is the difference between a cushion corner moulding and a standard angle bead?
A standard angle bead typically has a sharp or minimally rounded nose, whereas a cushion corner profile features a more generously rounded, softened edge. This makes it better suited to hardwood joinery applications where a refined appearance and a degree of impact resistance on the corner are both needed.
Can this white oak moulding be used externally?
This moulding is unfinished solid white oak and is intended primarily for internal use. White oak does have good natural durability compared with red oak, but for external applications it would need a thorough and maintained coating system. For exposed outdoor situations, a treated or profiled hardwood product would generally be more appropriate.
Do I need to pre-drill before nailing this moulding?
White oak is a dense hardwood, so pre-drilling pilot holes near the ends of each length is advisable to prevent splitting, particularly within 100mm of a cut end. Along the main run, a brad nailer or a fine-gauge oval nail driven at an angle will usually seat without splitting, provided you avoid nailing too close to the edge.
