What Are Lug Nut Indicators?
Lug nut indicators — also called wheel nut indicators or loose nut indicators — are injection-molded indicators that press onto each lug nut. Their purpose is straightforward: show a driver or technician whether a nut has rotated during operation. Any movement signals loosening, which can lead to wheel-off failure and serious safety consequences. Torque-Tight™ indicators are more than 2x the size of competing products, making detection immediate and unmistakable at a glance.
How Torque-Tight™ Indicators Work
The 24-point design creates a precise interference fit over the lug nut's hex head. Indicators stay firmly in place through vibration, weather, and heat cycles but can still be installed or removed by hand. Most fleets point all indicators in the same direction when nuts are properly torqued. If a nut begins backing off, its indicator rotates out of alignment — visible in seconds during any walkaround without tools, bending down, or removing wheel covers.
Independent Durability Testing — ISO 17025 / ASTM G154-23
Torque-Tight™ indicators were independently tested by Element Materials Technology, an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, per ASTM G154-23 Cycle 1 (accelerated UV and condensation cycling). After 500 hours of accelerated weathering — equivalent to approximately 1–2 years of real-world outdoor exposure — Torque-Tight™ maintained an AATCC color retention rating of 4.5–5.0 throughout. The leading competing product dropped to a rating of 2.5 by 288 hours. Color retention matters in service: a faded or discolored indicator is harder to read during a fast walkaround and reduces the reliability of your inspection program.
Why 33mm Is the Correct Size for Most Heavy Trucks
33mm is the standard lug nut hex size used on nearly every Class 8 tractor and commercial trailer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. If you operate Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, International, Mack, Volvo, or Western Star tractors — or hub-piloted commercial trailers — 33mm is almost certainly your size.
33mm vs 22mm — Avoiding the Most Common Mix-Up
M22x1.5 refers to the wheel stud diameter. The lug nut that threads onto an M22 stud has a 33mm hex head — so 33mm is the correct indicator size for virtually every heavy truck application. 22mm indicators are sized for smaller lug nuts found on light commercial and some medium-duty applications.
How To Confirm Your Size
Use a socket. If a 33mm or 1-5/16" socket fits your lug nuts, these are the correct indicators. When in doubt, measure the flat-to-flat width of the hex head with a caliper.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size lug nut indicator fits a Kenworth or Peterbilt?
Almost all Class 8 Kenworth and Peterbilt tractors use a 33mm hex lug nut. The Torque-Tight™ 33mm indicator is the correct fit for these vehicles and for the vast majority of commercial trailers running hub-piloted wheels.
Do I need 33mm or 22mm lug nut indicators for my semi truck?
For Class 8 semi trucks and commercial trailers, 33mm is correct. The 22mm size is designed for light commercial and some medium-duty applications. The M22 designation you may see on wheel studs refers to stud diameter, not the lug nut hex size — the nut itself measures 33mm across the flats.
How do Torque-Tight™ indicators compare to Wheel Check?
In independent accelerated weathering testing per ASTM G154-23 Cycle 1 conducted by Element Materials Technology (ISO 17025 accredited), Torque-Tight™ maintained an AATCC color retention rating of 4.5–5.0 through 500 hours. Wheel Check dropped to 2.5 by 288 hours. Torque-Tight™ indicators are also more than 2x the physical size of Wheel Check, improving visibility during fast walkaround inspections.
Are Torque-Tight™ indicators compliant with Buy America requirements?
Torque-Tight™ lug nut indicators are manufactured in the USA. Transit agencies and government fleets pursuing federally funded procurement should confirm specific FTA compliance requirements with their procurement officer, as Buy America applicability depends on program-specific thresholds and contract terms.
What is the difference between the standard and Chrome Protect 33mm indicators?
The standard 33mm indicator is molded in colored LDPE and is the right choice for most fleet applications. The Chrome Protect 33mm indicator features a chrome finish designed for polished or chrome lug nuts where aesthetics matter alongside safety — common on show trucks and premium fleet builds.
How long do lug nut indicators last?
Based on independent ISO 17025 testing, Torque-Tight™ indicators maintain strong color retention through 500 hours of accelerated UV and condensation cycling. Real-world service life will vary by geography, climate, and operating conditions, but most fleets see 1–2 years of reliable service per set. Torque-Tight™ backs every indicator with a 2-year warranty.
Installing across a full fleet? The Torque-Tight™ 33mm Installation & Removal Tool speeds up installation and removal significantly — reducing per-truck labor time on large rollouts.
