So begins The Cold War: A History, a wide-ranging narrative by award-winning political commentator Martin Walker, which was one of the first major studies of its kind. Now that it's over, it's crucial to our future to understand how the Cold War has shaped us and, especially, to recognize it as the economic and political dynamic that determined the structure of today's global economy.

From the origins of the Marshall Plan, which revived Europe after World War II, and the strategic decision to rebuild a defeated Japan into a bulwark against China, to the collapse of the Berlin Wall, this authoritative work reveals how the West was built into an economic alliance that overpowered the Soviet economy while also unleashing global economic forces that today challenge the traditional nation-state.

The Cold War was more of a global conflict than was either of this century's two major wars; far more than a confrontation between states or even empires, it was, as Martin Walker puts it, "a total war between economic and social systems, an industrial test to destruction."

Walker reminds us how easy it is to forget that there were many occasions in the late 1940s in which victory seemed far from assured, and that this uncertainty lent a particular urgency to the efforts of postwar Western leaders. The West continued to be alarmed by the prospect of defeat right up to the Soviet empire's last breath. At the end of the 1940s the fear was generated by communist expansion into Eastern Europe and China; in the 1960s by the prospect of defeat in Vietnam. In the 1970s the failure of d tente and the West's economic crisis brought a new generation of dedicated anti-Communists to prominence. For more than forty years, as this detailed analysis makes clear, the outcome of the Cold War was in doubt.

We also come to understand how the arms race caused new alignments and shifts in domestic power. As the United States became the national security state, California, which had a population of five million at the start of the Cold War, grew to thirty million and, by the 1980s provided one in every ten members of Congress and two presidents.

Using newly opened Kremlin archives and his own experiences in the field, Martin Walker has written a brilliant analysis of the conflict that has shaped the contemporary world.

Alba packaging stinks
Style: SPF 50, Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Complete waste of money! I ended up tossing it out because it’s IMPOSSIBLE to use. You should be able to twist the top to lock/unlock and spray it. NOPE. The top just spins and doesn’t catch or you cannot twist it at all. It’s also virtually impossible to spray. I had to hold it against my torso and press with both thumbs to get it to spray. Meanwhile, it’s leaking, the bottle is getting slippery. And then the spray goes EVERYWHERE, it’s not a narrow spray but it’s as if you’re dusting crops. I tried to see if it needed a certain pressure point, two fingers, bloody hell it’s not a Magic Mouse you should be able to unlock and spray it with one hand. Anyway, Alba needs to do some QC on their packaging. The last pump lotion I got, the pump also did not work. It just spun and spun and could not be unlocked. I had to wash and reuse the pump from an old bottle.

Best sunscreen brand! Fair, sensitive-skinned and rely on this
Style: SPF 50, Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Alba Botanica is my favorite brand for sunscreen products and it checks all the boxes on my list: Excellent long lasting coverage, fine mist spray and easy coverage cream versions, great for my sensitive skin (no breakouts- I do NOT use it on my face though), the Hawaiian fragrance is pleasant, it’s reef safe (a big one for me as a snorkel/dive aficionado), and organic ingredients. The large size lasts 5 full days when on a boat all day in the Carribbean, and I only apply it twice (once in morning, and again midday.) I have fair skin, and I never burn. The spray version is, by nature of its aerosol capacity, a bit drying on the skin, but this is to be expected, and it creates a long lasting barrier. The cream version is a wonderful emollient, although not quite as long lasting. Best deal is only in the summer season at CostCo for a 2 pack... in my searches, Amazon has the best deal otherwise.

Reliable protection that stays put during workouts!
Style: SPF 50, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I’ve tried many expensive name-brand sunscreens, but this Amazon Basics version performs just as well, if not better. It’s become my go-to for morning runs and trips to the beach because it actually stays on even when I’m sweating. Why I gave it 5 stars: Non-Greasy Formula: Unlike other sport sunscreens, this one absorbs quickly and doesn't leave that heavy, sticky film on my skin. Actually Water Resistant: I’ve used it for laps in the pool and long hikes; as long as I reapply as directed, I haven't had a single sunburn. No "Sting": One of the best things is that it doesn't run into my eyes and sting when I start to sweat—a huge plus for runners. Great Value: You get a generous 8-ounce bottle for a fraction of the price of "premium" brands. The fact that it’s formulated without Oxybenzone is an added bonus for peace of mind. If you’re looking for effective, no-frills sun protection for an active lifestyle, you can't beat this. It’s a staple in my gym bag now!

Great value and very practical
Style: SPF 50, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 6)
This sunscreen is a great value for the price. The SPF 50 protection works well and the lotion applies smoothly without feeling too greasy. It absorbs nicely and provides good coverage for outdoor activities. I especially like using these bottles to refill the sunscreen dispensers at my Airbnb for guests. It’s convenient, reliable, and affordable when you need multiple bottles available. Overall, it’s a solid everyday sunscreen and a very practical option if you need good protection at a reasonable price.
