Description

Through "poverty's Vale": A Hardscrabble Boyhood in Upstate New York, 1832-1862Writing his full length reminiscence in a lonely Adirondack cabin during the winter of 1891 92, Conklin recounts the first thirteen years of his life on a farm in Schoharie County, his young manhood in Herkimer County, and his service in the Civil War. The story is one of a hardscrabble life, of farming on marginal land, and of struggling each day for the necessary food and clothing. And yet Conklin asserts that these years were the happiest he knew.

Writing his full-length reminiscence in a lonely Adirondack cabin during the winter of 1891-92, Conklin recounts the first thirteen years of his life on a farm in Schoharie County, his young manhood in Herkimer County, and his service in the Civil War. The story is one of a hardscrabble life, of farming on marginal land, and of struggling each day for the necessary food and clothing. And yet Conklin asserts that these years were the happiest he knew. The Conklin family was close-knit, loving, and self-sufficient. They built their home, made their own clothing, and grew much of their food. Everyone contributed his or her share to the good of the family group. In this vivid portrayal of family life, we read about ordinary events that are unfamiliar to us today--weaving cloth, churning butter, making shingles, starting a fire with flint and steel, setting traps--and about the technology of the nineteenth century.

With insight, humanity, and a perspective gained through distance and time, Henry Conklin gives us a dramatic and moving narrative in which we become deeply involved. In telling his story, Conklin is not only reliving the past but also saving the events, experiences, and persons of his life from oblivion, and contributing to our historical knowledge of the rural backwaters of antebellum America.

Conklin's reminiscence was preserved by his son and then by his grandson Roy Conklin, who brought it to the attention of Wendell Tripp. Several engravings supplement the text, and the editor has provided footnotes to many references that may be unclear to present-day readers.

Not good quality
Color: Black, Size: Four Panel
Not the easiest thing to assemble, the screwdriver provided doesn't work so I hope you have your own. The fabric panels were at least an inch too short and weren't long enough to stretch to top and bottom, strain on velcro made them pop off with the slightest movement. Once assembled the panels were assembled they weren't stable at all and would fall over easily. Not very safe

Better than expected!
I ordered this room divider for my small apartment and the quality is surprisingly pretty good for the price paid — sturdy metal poles, mid-weight fabric panels enough for privacy (i.e.: not so see-through), brand new screws, and thick plastic end connectors. Instructions are figures only — READ THE PICTURES CAREFULLY! Highly recommend having a second person to help with assembling the divider panels together. This took me and my friend over an hour to assemble partly because there’s only one hex key to tighten the screws (and I forgot to add the plastic end connectors to the #3-labeled poles, so I had to take it apart and then set it up again). Overall satisfied with this purchase.

Privacy screen
I purchased this to set up as a privacy wall to make a makeshift guest “room” in our living room. It is a beautiful wine color it was very easy to assemble it took me like maybe all of five minutes and it’s very lightweight and easy to move. I think $50+ is steep for this item- it’s literally cloth stretched across a cheap frame- but it is not see through and it worked for what we needed. I would recommend it. There is a gap at the bottom that a cat can easily walk under or a nosey dog can poke their head through- but for people privacy it’s very good- and tall!

Wrong pieces included
Color: Black, Size: Four Panel
Was only able to use 3 of the panels the last poles were different from the others. The panels that we were able to put together are very nice and seems durable.

Great quality, very versatile
Size: 6 Panel-132‘’Wide, Color: Beige, Size: 6 Panel-132‘’Wide, Color: Beige
I'm very pleased with this item. It was not complicated to assemble but some items required dexterity and strength. The fabric panels are nice and tight and that's partly why it's a little hard to get that final screw in. I'm very pleased with the legs and the wheels. The metal components are nicely finished and feel substantial and endurable. I can easily fold this so many different ways… I can minimize the number of panels that are seen if desired and it can be straight or accordion. It's very stable which was hugely important to me because I'm fostering many many cats. It's not cheap looking and the light color fabric allows enough light to pass through that it doesn't darken the room substantially. I think the price was very reasonable
