Insta360 X4 Air Overview

Capture cinematic 360° video with the ultracompact Insta360 X4 Air 360° Action Camera Starter Bundle, capable of capturing 8K30 360° video in dual or single-lens modes, all in one portable action camera. Smaller and lighter than the X4 camera, the X4 Air also has a rugged design and is natively waterproof up to 49′. The Starter bundle also includes a selfie stick, an extra battery, and a lens cap.

8K30 360° Video

The X4 Air features ultrasharp 8K resolution, making reframed video on par with standard camera footage for easier matching edits. Since the footage is captured with high-quality H.265 compression, the 8K files are small enough to edit using the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio.

NOTE: Shooting in 8K consumes more power than lower resolutions. Shoot 8K only in bright daylight conditions; it is recommended to lower the capture resolution when shooting in low light.

6K/4K Capture and Me Mode

The X4 Air supports up to 8K30, 6K48, and 4K60 video for smooth shots at ultrahigh-resolution. The camera also features Me Mode, which records a 170° field of view flat video, perfect for POV video with an invisible selfie stick. Me Mode supports up to UHD 4K30 and 1080p120 slow-motion modes with external stitching.

AdaptiveTone automatically balances brightness, color, and contrast from each lens for crisp, natural‑looking videos. Active HDR boosts colors in the highlights and shadows and captures high detail in low light.

29MP Still Photo Capture
The X4 Air can process 29MP photos with 7680 x 3840 resolution in-camera, delivering high-quality, ready-to-share images that have low noise and high-quality color.
2 Cameras in 1 with 4K60 Single-Lens Mode

The X4 Air camera doubles as a wide-angle action camera with InstaFrame mode, by filming with only one lens, and supports up to UHD 4K60 single-lens capture. You can even turn a 360° shot into a split-screen using the app.

You don’t even have to aim the camera to always get the shot. The X4 Air captures every angle, so you just hit record, capture the moment, and pick the best shots later with easy reframing tools in the Insta360 app.

Invisible Selfie Stick for Third-Person Views
When the X4 Air is attached to a selfie stick, the stick disappears in your edit, enabling you to capture aerial angles and third-person perspectives that are possible to achieve without a second operator.
Mobile Insta360 App

The Insta360 mobile app allows you to edit 360° footage with ease.

  • Quick Edit: Choose from several reframing methods, such as physically moving your phone, swiping the screen, using the new virtual joystick, or long-pressing to activate the upgraded Deep Track 3.0 for even smoother footage.
  • AI Edit: Simple editing for beginning users makes framing and editing easy.
  • Pro Mode: For a hands-on approach, you can manually add keyframes and perform advanced edits using the Pro tab.
  • Shot Lab: A collection of stock effects makes editing easy.
  • Motion ND: Apply cinema ND filters without the need for actual filters to achieve the Motion ND effect.
  • App Background Downloading: Download footage from the camera while the Insta360 app runs quietly in the background, leaving your phone free for other tasks.
AI Gesture and Voice Control

You can now use hand gestures to start/stop recording or take a photo, which is perfect for group shots, noisy locations, mounting on a selfie stick, when wearing thick gloves, or simply not disturbing others in the area with sound, such as voice control.

You can also use Twist to Shoot, which allows you to rotate the camera back and forth to start or stop recording or to capture a still photo. With Voice Control 2.0, you can give the camera a voice command to control it from a distance.

Desktop Insta360 Studio Software

Use the new and improved Insta360 Studio and take your 360° skills to the next level and stand out. It features keyframing, professional tools, H.265 encoding, 100 Mb/s bit rate, 4K output, and high frame rate for action footage that are all ideal for upload onto internet sites such as YouTube.

A new Insta360 Reframe plug-in for Adobe Premiere is also available, which saves you time during your editing workflow. It directly imports .insv files to Premiere without stitching, improves image quality, and simplifies the process by not requiring you to leave the Premiere app to process your footage.

Replaceable Lens Guards
The X4 Air features replaceable lens guards, allowing you to transport the camera into the field without damaging the lenses. Optional, separately available Premium lens guards are made from clear, tempered glass that is scratch-resistant and crystal clear, and can be used while shooting.
Clear Audio

The X4 Air features four microphones with an updated wind guard that provides clear audio even in windy conditions. Audio modes include:

  • Auto wind reduction algorithm
  • Active wind reduction
  • Stereo direction focus
  • Reduces background noise and enhances voices
Touchscreen Display
The bright touchscreen is made from durable Gorilla Glass, and it allows you to control the camera, select shooting modes, change settings, preview your images and footage, and more.
2010mAh Battery

The X4 Air features a removable 2010mAh battery that can charge to 100% in less than an hour.

It provides up to 88 minutes of recording when capturing 8K30 video in normal conditions.

FlowState Stabilization and Horizon Lock

From rocky roads to rolling waves, the X4 Air provides smooth and steady image stabilization, no matter what adventure you’re on.

With 360° Horizon Lock, the camera keeps your footage perfectly level, even when you completely rotate the camera.

Waterproof Design

Dive into the water with your X4 Air without a case, as the camera is waterproof down to 49′.

If you need to dive deeper, an optional Invisible Dive Case is available separately for 360° underwater footage down to 197′.

Connectivity Options
  • A USB-C 3.0 port connects your X4 Air camera to a computer to charge or offload footage.
  • Wi-Fi transmission connects to your smartphone app.
  • A microSD card can be utilized to record on the camera and can use a card with UHS-I V30 minimum class up to 1TB in storage size.

Disappointing
Format: Hardcover
I had high hopes. But this book seems to be more of a rosy retrospective of one college president years in charge than it is a real useful book about how to help students.

Reminds us of the value of a college education beyond academic facts and skills.
Format: Kindle
At a time when many students and families are questioning the value of a 4-year college education, Porterfield does a great job of describing the intangibles behind an earned degree. Many people are aware that there is more to a college education than academic facts and skills, but this book presents the case comprehensively. It identifies "soft skills" specifically and gives good examples of how they can be taught and learned in the college environment.

Loved it!
Format: Kindle
Mia is a ten-year-old Chinese immigrant. She had immigrated to California from China 2 years earlier with her parents, who were hoping for a better life. Unfortunately, the United States in the 1990s was not exactly welcoming to Chinese immigrants, and many struggled. Mia and her parents were no different. After gaining and losing several jobs and facing homelessness again, Mia's parents take a job managing a motel. Unfortunately, the motel owner - who is Taiwanese, not Chinese, as he is quick to point out - is not only overtly racist, he is also exploitive and seems almost happy to point out to Mia's parents that they could be replaced immediately when they question his actions. But Mia and her parents try to make the best of it. Mia works the front desk when at the motel, quickly learning the ropes and consistently trying to find ways to help the guests and her family. She also becomes friends with the weeklies at the motel - those guests who live at the motel and pay weekly - and they quickly become part of her growing family. At school, though, Mia struggles. She can't tell the other students - most of whom are white - that she lives in a motel. She struggles in English, though she loves writing, and she also has disagreements with her mother who thinks she should focus on math and forget about writing because "she'll never be able to write as well as the white kids" for whom English is their native language. Most of the book is a slice-of-life look at running a hotel and Mia's struggle to integrate with the other students at school. Though it may seem to some that too much goes wrong at the motel in too short a period of time, I can say from experience that this depiction is incredibly realistic. While reading it, I was having flashbacks to my own experience managing a motel and running the front desk. The news Mia and her family get in chapter 55, in particular, hit hard on the feels for me, because my husband and I went through that same situation. We didn't use the same solution that Mia and her family did, and I definitely loved the solution they came up with. Throughout the story were the letters that Mia wrote, each for a different situation. These were an added touch, helping to bring the reader back to the days of the early and mid-90s, before email was ubiquitous and text messaging was still a dream. Her struggle to put word to paper, to make sure she was using the right words and tenses, was an added dimension to the story that I didn't expect but definitely appreciated. The author's note at the end, where she discussed her own experiences was also incredibly moving, and I loved learning that much of the book's scenarios were pulled from her own experiences, while also wanting to give a hug to the child that had to experience that struggle. I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook, narrated by Sunny Lu, and I highly recommend it. Lu did a wonderful job with the narration, injecting just the right amount of emotion and tension into the performance. I had to force myself to stop listening so I could go to bed; had I not, I would have listened right through to the end and not getting any sleep. While I would have enjoyed the story, work the next day would not have been fun. Lol. So, long review short, I definitely recommend this book. For younger readers, I would recommend a parent read with them, as there are some tough situations that they may need/want to talk about. But overall, this is a story of hope for an immigrant family who is struggling to make a better life for themselves.

My favorite middle grade book of 2018 so far
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
I'll never look at a motel with the same eyes again. Author Kelly Yang brings us Mia Tang, a younger version of herself, who helped her parents manage a motel in southern California in the early 1990s. Mia and her parents arrive from China with two hundred dollars, unwavering optimism, and the belief that if they work hard enough, they will achieve the American dream:  a big house, a dog, and an endless supply of juicy hamburgers. After two years of backbreaking jobs and sketchy living conditions, Mia's parents rush to sign a contract to manage the Calista Motel located five miles from Disneyland. Mr. Yao, the notoriously cheap and unscrupulous motel owner, informs the Tangs that the contract allows him to make any changes and if they don't like the terms, "Just say the word. There are ten thousand immigrants who would take your job in two seconds" (p. 27). Mia quickly makes friends with the "weeklies" and assigns herself front desk duty because her parents must clean every room themselves and be available 24/7  to check in guests. Mia's moxie and sense of justice emerge as she takes on adult responsibilities with a sense of pride and unbridled enthusiasm. She makes plenty of mistakes which makes us empathize with her struggles and root for her as she tackles the english language, bullies, crime, and embarrassment about her thrift store clothes. (Keep your eyes open for the tale of the designer jeans.) Chapters are vignettes that are strung along with seamless transitions to make reading a pure pleasure. The author captures Mia's voice so authentically that the reader is instantly drawn into the story. Mia's uses the power of the written word to advocate for herself and others. Kids will fall in love with Mia and cheer her fierce determination as she navigates her way through poverty and injustice, bringing her family, the weeklies, and everyone else who want to be part of the American dream with her.
