The Blackmagic Design Spares - Enclosure - ATEM Joystick is the complete internal mechanical and electronic sub-assembly for the 3-axis joystick found on professional ATEM control panels. As a primary tool for controlling PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras and positioning DVE (Digital Video Effects) boxes, the joystick is a high-precision component that can eventually wear out or suffer mechanical damage in high-pressure live environments.

3-Axis Precision Control

This joystick is not a simple 2-way toggle; it is a complex 3-axis controller designed for simultaneous multi-directional movement:

  • X & Y Axis (Pan/Tilt): Smooth horizontal and vertical movement for positioning video layers or moving cameras.

  • Z-Axis (Zoom/Rotate): The "Twist" function on the top of the stick, used for zooming lenses or rotating DVE picture-in-picture boxes.

  • Top Button: Most models feature an integrated button on the very top of the stick, used for "Set" commands or centering the camera.

Compatible Hardware

This spare part is the standard replacement for the joystick found on:

  • ATEM 1 M/E, 2 M/E, and 4 M/E Advanced Panels.

  • ATEM Camera Control Panel: Used specifically for iris and master black control in conjunction with the joystick movement.

  • Legacy ATEM Production Panels: The original silver-chassis control surfaces.

When to Replace the Joystick

Because the joystick uses internal spring-centering and delicate potentiometers or sensors, it is prone to specific failure modes:

  • Drifting: The most common issue. Even when the joystick is centered, the camera or DVE box slowly "drifts" in one direction on screen.

  • Loss of Z-Axis: The twist function becomes non-responsive or "crunchy," making it impossible to zoom or rotate accurately.

  • Mechanical Snap: The internal centering springs snap, causing the stick to limp to one side rather than returning to the middle.

  • Intermittent Connection: The "Top Button" stops firing, or the movement becomes "jittery" in software.

Key Features

  • Genuine OEM Component: Matches the specific resistance and voltage curve required by Blackmagic’s internal logic.

  • Integrated Wiring: Typically includes the ribbon cable or molex-style harness that plugs directly into the panel's controller board.

  • Heavy-Duty Construction: Designed to withstand the "heavy-handed" use often seen during fast-paced live sports or breaking news.

Technical Installation Note

Replacing the joystick enclosure is a delicate mechanical task that requires post-installation software steps.

  • Calibration is Mandatory: Just like the T-Bar, after installing a new joystick, you must access the panel's "Maintenance" or "Setup" menu to perform a Joystick Calibration. This teaches the system where the "Dead Center" and "Maximum Reach" points are for all three axes.

  • Panel Disassembly: Accessing the joystick usually requires opening the main chassis of the ATEM panel. Be mindful of the numerous small ribbon cables that connect the various button rows; these can be easily snagged.

  • Top Cap Transfer: This spare part often includes the internal mechanism and the shaft, but you may need to transfer your original plastic or rubberized "top cap" and twist-grip to the new unit.

  • Static Safety: The joystick connects to the logic board which contains sensitive FPGAs. Always use an anti-static wrist strap during the swap.

Is your joystick currently "drifting" in one direction, or has the physical centering mechanism failed? Knowing the symptom can help confirm if a software calibration might fix it before you commit to a hardware replacement.

Annoying sound but DOGGY TOY JOY!!
Pattern Name: Skunk
My 14 month old is squeaker OBSESSED, but she easily does surgery and defluffs. However this toy has been perfect. The sound when you shake is over the top and creates so much excitement. She loves to chase and chew this and play tug with this, and no tears from tug or points where she's tried to excise squeaker so far!

Great toy loved by 3 big dogs
Pattern Name: Skunk
We have a black lab and 2 grandpups (a Great Dane and a Cane Corso) that visit regularly. All 3 love this toy. All 3 destroy toys pretty quickly, sometimes within minutes. I have no idea what it is about this one, but they have not even remotely destroyed it except for major slobber damage from being so loved. I bought the first one months ago from TJ Maxx and then bought another on here thinking it could be a replacement when the first one got destroyed. The first one has yet to be destroyed. It sounds like there is a water bottle inside of it but it is some kind of coil thing. That being said, this toy can be very annoying to listen to, but we tolerate it for 3 very happy dogs.

Not for us, unfortunately.
Pattern Name: Chipmunk
Cute idea. We have doxies. Unfortunately, they ripped the apart in 5 minutes to get to the squeaker. I'm sure other breeds are more gentle with their toys. It would be a great toy for them.

Very durable
Pattern Name: Chipmunk
Our dog loves this "squeaky." He got it as a gift 11 months ago and I finally had to replace it because he almost had the head and tail chewed off -- took him about a year of chewing. I almost hated to throw the old one away because the squeakers still worked! Our dog is small -- about 22 lbs. -- but is a terrier mix and loves playing tug-of-war with this Zippy toy and he also loves shaking it like crazy. It's a great value compared to the toys I find in the local pet stores. Most of those "die" because he punctures them with his teeth so they no longer squeak. This one is well worth the price.
