Historical Significance
The team was formed as a group of friends playing baseball in 1932 in Chatham, Ontario since black players were banned from major league baseball and were not welcome on many amateur white teams. They began setting up their own exhibitions games until a local business man and member of the OBAA noticed the skill level of the team. He arranged city games where they would compete against white teams and they quickly grew in popularity. In just their second year of competitive play, the Chatham All Stars won their first provincial championship, making them the first Black team ever to win an OBAA title.
The team included notable players such as Earl "Flat' Chase, Wilfred "boomer" Harding, Ferguson Jenkins Sr. and Willie Shaughnosh. Our jersey is made to pay homage to the legacy of Baseball in Canada that has remained hidden for for close to a century. Black contributions to the world of sports extend beyond breaking color barriers - it's deeply tied to the families and communities that Black people built that still stand to this day. Thank you to the amazing innovators and captivating players for the all Black baseball team, the Chatham All Stars.
