一日，原是學者的父親被兩位士兵強行帶走，帕瓦娜伴隨母親前往監獄要求釋放父親卻慘遭毒打，母親傷心欲絕。年長的姐姐不宜拋頭在外，年少的弟妹也幫不上忙，帕瓦娜只得被迫剪髮，扮成男孩，開始為一家三餐奮鬥。帕瓦娜以男兒身出現，替代父親為人讀信寫信，視野和思想驟然變得無比寬廣與開放。她體認到百姓在強勢政權的對待下，是那樣的無力與無奈。生活壓力與現實震撼強迫帕瓦娜快速脫離原先應是夢幻般美好的青少年階段……
