Erythromycin Description
Erythromycin is an antibiotic used to treat skin conditions such as acne.
It prevents bacteria from multiplying, helping your skin to recover.
Typically, you'll take two tablets twice daily.

What is Erythromycin?

Erythromycin is a type of macrolide antibiotic. It's commonly used to treat chest and lung infections, but it's also good for skin issues such as acne, folliculitis, and rosacea. Erythromycin works by killing bacteria and reducing inflammation, which helps your skin to heal.

Erythromycin works as an antibiotic by preventing bacteria from growing in blocked pores, which helps spots to clear up. Rosacea can look similar to acne, with pimples appearing on your face, but it's mainly characterised by redness from blood vessels that might burst. It's also due to inflammation. Erythromycin can help reduce your symptoms and improve your skin's condition.

Erythromycin is sometimes used for rosacea and folliculitis even though it's not officially approved for these conditions. This is known as 'off-label' use. Despite not being on the label, there's a lot of evidence showing it works well for these issues, so it's a fairly common practice.

How does Erythromycin work?

Erythromycin works by disrupting protein production in bacterial cells. This action prevents the bacteria from multiplying and, at higher doses, can kill them. As a result, it stops bacteria from growing on your skin and reduces the inflammation causing your skin condition.

When you take Erythromycin tablets, they're quickly absorbed into your bloodstream and begin working throughout your body, including on your skin and hair follicles. The medication reaches its highest concentration in your body about four hours after you take it.

What doses of Erythromycin are there?

Erythromycin tablets are available in two strengths: 250 mg and 500 mg. Typically, you'll take two 250 mg tablets twice a day until you've completed the course. It's crucial to finish the entire treatment, even if your skin starts to improve.

Erythromycin is available as a powder for treating various infections and as a topical treatment for acne when combined with other active ingredients. Have a chat with our clinician about your symptoms, and we'll assist you in finding the right form and dosage for your needs.

How long does it take Erythromycin to work?

Erythromycin begins to work in your body quite swiftly. However, it might take a few weeks or even months to notice the complete effects. Many people use Erythromycin for an extended period to fully benefit their skin.

If a few weeks have passed and your acne or folliculitis hasn't improved, or if it's worsened, it's a good idea to speak with your clinician. If you're using our service, simply log into your account and send us a message. Our clinical team may ask you to upload a photo of your skin and can explore other treatment options for you.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Erythromycin?

It's really important to take Erythromycin exactly as your doctor has instructed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's nearly time for your next dose, just skip the one you missed and carry on with your regular schedule. Don't take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.

Taking an excessive amount of Erythromycin typically doesn't cause serious problems. However, it might make you more prone to side effects such as diarrhoea and stomach upset, though it's generally not harmful to your health. If you're worried about having taken too much Erythromycin, contact your clinician for advice. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while on this medication.

How is Erythromycin different from other treatments for acne, folliculitis and rosacea?

If topical treatments haven't worked for your acne, folliculitis, or rosacea, erythromycin could be a suitable option. It's also beneficial if your skin condition is more severe. Erythromycin addresses the underlying cause of your inflammation by eliminating the harmful bacteria, allowing your skin to heal completely.

Erythromycin is one of the few antibiotics that can treat acne, folliculitis, and rosacea. If you've already tried over-the-counter gels and creams without success, it might be worth discussing Erythromycin with your clinician.

Is Erythromycin similar to any other treatments?

Aknemycin Plus Solution is a treatment for acne that includes erythromycin and tretinoin. You apply it directly to your skin as it's a topical treatment. Another option is Zineryt Solution, which is also applied to the skin and contains erythromycin and zinc. If you're considering erythromycin but prefer not to take antibiotic tablets, these treatments might be suitable for you.

There are other antibiotic tablets for treating acne, such as lymecycline and doxycycline. Flucloxacillin is occasionally used for folliculitis. If Erythromycin isn't suitable for you, you might consider trying one of these alternatives. Simply have a chat with our clinicians about your health, and we'll discuss your options with you.

How effective is Erythromycin?

Erythromycin is a strong treatment for skin conditions and has been used safely for many years, proving its safety and effectiveness. In one study, 77% of participants noticed their acne improved or significantly improved after taking erythromycin tablets for 12 weeks.

Erythromycin is also quite effective for treating rosacea. It works well because it reduces inflammation and helps manage symptoms during flare-ups.

For folliculitis, if it's widespread and not improving with creams or ointments, antibiotics such as Erythromycin are often prescribed to treat it throughout the body.

If you've tried gentler treatments for skin conditions and they haven't been effective, Erythromycin might be a good option to consider.

Do I need a prescription for Erythromycin?

Yes, you'll need a clinician to prescribe Erythromycin for you. It's a powerful antibiotic, so it's not suitable for everyone. It's also not advised for very mild acne or rosacea, as it's better to start with some milder treatments available over the counter.

If you're considering Erythromycin, have a chat with our clinicians about your health. We'll ask a few quick questions to ensure it's a safe and appropriate choice for you. If it is, our expert clinicians can issue a prescription and arrange for your treatment to be delivered directly to you.

Lasted whole five minutes!
Size: One Size, Size: One Size
I received this last night and did a cute "unwrapping" this morning for my dog, who was thrilled to get new balls. Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived. I know the description says this isn't a chew toy or for aggressive chewers, but lasting only five minutes is ridiculous. You can see in my photo that it ripped from a single bite while my pup was just pulling the ball. I thought that was exactly what this toy was designed for!

Our GSD loves this toy whether playing with it by himself or with us - he grabs the rope and flings it then chases it…it’s become his favorite toy!

Dog loves it, but it comes apart pretty quick.
Size: One Size
The dog loved chasing it and playing tug-of-war, but it lasted less than 30 days. If the outer rubber portion of cover was thicker, or all canvas material, it would probably last for a few months of rough play. May buy again if I can't find something similar to try.

This is a big ball.
Larger than I thought but still a great toy for a heavy chew pup, easy to toss and won't go under funiture. She has the same ball in a 5 inch size so I know it's quality and will last. Can't wait for Summer, will make a great yard ball.

Second one, first one lasted a good while
We leave it outside in the weather with solid results for our backyard dog, and the dog loves this thing. It's our go to toy for her, ... perfect for kick to fetch, tug of war, hide in the shirt, bump the human leg when it is wet, etc. ;) The first one we used and used and finally it started to show too much weathering, mildew, and finally breaking after like 1.5 years... we have extremely hot and wet weather here. When new though, these balls take a pounding. Our 50 pound dog can play tug of war to the extent we can pick her up while she holds onto the ball with her teeth. The ball doesn't flinch and the dog loves it. Kicking it is fun because you can give it a wallop and it won't go over the fence since the design absorbs a fair bit of the kick energy, but it is still enough for an adult or teen to send it about 1/4 an acre away. What else... oh the dog has a funny habit of finding the one spot that isn't an empty pentagon... as in the plastic is filled in there... and she likes to bit on that part especially during tug of war. I should also mention our dog literally breaks apart and sometimes eats sticks and twigs in the yard, can't be healthy, so a nice diversion is this ball that she will chew on once in a while without destroying it.
