Virbac — Effipro Spot-On for Extra Large Dogs | 40–60kg | Flea & Tick Treatment | 1 Ampule

Proven fipronil protection for your largest dogs. Virbac Effipro Spot-On is a veterinary-grade spot-on parasiticide containing fipronil — one of the most clinically proven and widely used active ingredients in flea and tick control — specifically dosed for extra large dogs weighing 40–60kg. Effipro provides fast, effective, and long-lasting protection against fleas and ticks through a single monthly spot-on application — the most convenient and reliable format for parasite prevention in large and extra large breed dogs. Fipronil works by disrupting the nervous system of fleas and ticks — killing existing infestations and preventing reinfestation for up to 4 weeks. From Virbac — the animal health company that applies pharmaceutical-grade scientific rigor to every product it produces — Effipro delivers the same fipronil efficacy that veterinarians have trusted for decades, in the precise dose formulated for the extra large dog. 1 ampule — one month of complete flea and tick protection for dogs 40–60kg.

Why Virbac Effipro Spot-On Extra Large Dogs Is The Best Choice

  • Fipronil — Clinically Proven Active Ingredient — Fipronil is one of the most extensively studied and clinically validated parasiticides available — decades of veterinary use confirming efficacy and safety.
  • Extra Large Dog Dose — 40–60kg — Precisely dosed for extra large breed dogs — the correct dose for maximum efficacy and safety in large breeds.
  • Flea Treatment & Prevention — Kills existing fleas on the dog within 24–48 hours and prevents reinfestation for up to 4 weeks.
  • Tick Treatment & Prevention — Kills ticks within 24–48 hours of attachment and prevents new tick attachment for up to 4 weeks.
  • Spot-On Convenience — Single monthly application to the skin between the shoulder blades — no tablets, no sprays, no collars — the most convenient parasite prevention format.
  • Waterproof After Drying — Remains effective after bathing and swimming once the application site has dried — practical for active large breed dogs.
  • Spreads Through Skin Oils — Fipronil distributes through the skin's sebaceous glands and lipid layer — providing whole-body coverage from a single application point.
  • Virbac — Veterinary Expertise — From one of the world's leading animal health companies — the same scientific rigor applied to all Virbac pharmaceutical products.
  • Single Ampule — One month of complete protection per ampule.

Product Details & Features

Understanding Fleas and Ticks — The Parasite Threat Fleas and ticks are the most common external parasites affecting dogs in Egypt and across the Middle East — and their impact extends far beyond the discomfort of infestation:

Fleas — The Infestation Risk:

Life cycle: The flea life cycle has four stages — egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult fleas on the dog represent only 5% of the total flea population — the remaining 95% (eggs, larvae, pupae) are in the environment (carpets, bedding, furniture). This means that treating the dog alone is insufficient — environmental treatment is also required for complete flea control.

Health consequences of flea infestation:

  • Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) — The most common allergic skin condition in dogs. A single flea bite can trigger an intense allergic reaction in sensitized dogs — causing severe itching, hair loss, and skin damage. FAD requires both flea control and allergy management.
  • Anemia — Heavy flea infestations can cause significant blood loss — particularly dangerous in puppies and small dogs
  • Tapeworm transmission — Dipylidium caninum tapeworm is transmitted through the ingestion of infected fleas during grooming
  • Bartonellosis — Flea-transmitted bacterial infection

Ticks — The Disease Vector Risk: Ticks are not merely a nuisance — they are vectors for serious, potentially life-threatening diseases:

  • Babesiosis — Babesia canis transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (the brown dog tick, the most common tick in Egypt) — destroys red blood cells, causing severe anemia, fever, and potentially fatal organ failure
  • Ehrlichiosis — Ehrlichia canis transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus — causes fever, lethargy, bleeding disorders, and immune suppression
  • Anaplasmosis — Anaplasma platys — causes cyclic thrombocytopenia (reduced platelet count) and bleeding tendency
  • Lyme disease — Borrelia burgdorferi — less common in Egypt but present in some regions

The Egyptian context: Rhipicephalus sanguineus (the brown dog tick) is the predominant tick species in Egypt — it is the primary vector for Babesia canis and Ehrlichia canis, making tick prevention a genuine life-saving intervention for dogs in Egypt. Monthly Effipro application is the most practical and effective tick prevention strategy for Egyptian dog owners.

Fipronil — The Active Ingredient Fipronil is the active ingredient in Virbac Effipro — and understanding how fipronil works explains why it is one of the most effective and trusted parasiticides available:

Mechanism of action: Fipronil is a phenylpyrazole insecticide/acaricide that works by:

  1. Blocking GABA-gated chloride channels — Fipronil binds to GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptors in the nervous system of insects and arachnids
  2. Disrupting nerve signal inhibition — GABA normally inhibits nerve signals — fipronil blocks this inhibition, causing uncontrolled nerve firing
  3. Hyperexcitation and death — The uncontrolled nerve activity causes hyperexcitation, paralysis, and death of the parasite

Selectivity: Fipronil has much higher affinity for insect and arachnid GABA receptors than mammalian GABA receptors — this selectivity is the basis of its safety in dogs and cats at therapeutic doses. The parasite is killed while the dog is unaffected.

Speed of action:

  • Fleas — Killed within 24–48 hours of contact with treated skin
  • Ticks — Killed within 24–48 hours of attachment — before most tick-borne diseases can be transmitted (most require 24–48 hours of attachment for transmission)

Distribution through skin oils: After spot-on application, fipronil distributes through the skin's sebaceous glands and lipid layer — spreading from the application site to provide whole-body coverage. This distribution mechanism:

  • Provides coverage of the entire body surface from a single application point
  • Maintains efficacy even after bathing — fipronil is stored in the sebaceous glands and continues to be released onto the skin surface
  • Provides residual activity for up to 4 weeks

The Spot-On Format — Why It Works The spot-on format is the most widely used and most convenient parasite prevention format for dogs:

Application simplicity:

  • Part the fur between the shoulder blades to expose the skin
  • Apply the entire contents of the ampule directly to the skin
  • Allow to dry — typically 24–48 hours before bathing

Why between the shoulder blades:

  • The dog cannot lick the application site — preventing ingestion
  • The location allows fipronil to distribute effectively through the skin's lipid layer
  • Easy access for the owner — no restraint required for most dogs

Waterproof after drying: Once the application site has dried (typically 24–48 hours), Effipro remains effective after bathing and swimming — fipronil stored in the sebaceous glands is not washed away by water. This is particularly important for large breed dogs who are frequently bathed or who swim.

Extra Large Dog Dosing — Why Size Matters The correct dose of fipronil is critical for both efficacy and safety:

Underdosing:

  • Insufficient fipronil concentration on the skin surface
  • Reduced efficacy — fleas and ticks may survive
  • Shorter duration of protection — may not last the full 4 weeks

Correct dosing for 40–60kg: The Effipro Extra Large Dog ampule contains the precise fipronil dose calculated for dogs weighing 40–60kg — ensuring:

  • Adequate skin surface concentration for complete flea and tick kill
  • Full 4-week duration of protection
  • Appropriate safety margin for the weight range

Breeds in the 40–60kg range:

  • German Shepherd (large males)
  • Rottweiler
  • Labrador Retriever (large males)
  • Golden Retriever (large males)
  • Doberman Pinscher
  • Belgian Malinois (large)
  • Siberian Husky (large)
  • Boxer (large)

Monthly Application — The Prevention Protocol Consistent monthly application is the foundation of effective flea and tick prevention:

Why monthly:

  • Fipronil's efficacy begins to decline after 4 weeks — monthly application maintains continuous protection
  • Flea eggs in the environment hatch continuously — monthly treatment prevents newly emerged fleas from establishing on the dog
  • Tick exposure is continuous in Egypt — monthly treatment ensures the dog is always protected

The prevention vs. treatment distinction:

  • Prevention — Monthly application before infestation occurs — the most effective and least disruptive approach
  • Treatment — Application after infestation is established — effective but requires concurrent environmental treatment for fleas

Environmental Treatment for Fleas When treating an active flea infestation, treating the dog alone is insufficient — the 95% of the flea population in the environment must also be addressed:

  • Wash all bedding at high temperature
  • Vacuum carpets, furniture, and crevices thoroughly — dispose of the vacuum bag immediately
  • Use an environmental flea spray (containing an insect growth regulator) on carpets and furniture
  • Treat all pets in the household simultaneously

too advanced for 18month old, but great book!
Format: Paperback
I love Richard Scarry! I bought this book for my 18 month old, who we are trying to teach to say please and thank you. Unfortunately this book is just way too advanced for her. It's full on stories rather than short pieces. I know, the suggested age was older but that is true for a lot of books that really can be enjoyed by younger tots. This one will be put away for at least another 6 months, and then kept on the shelf of "appropriate" but not in her board book box. However, I really like that she can now say "Lowly" :) Richard Scarry is one of my favorite authors/illustrators from childhood and I'm glad to have this book. It just is beyond the reach of my LO at this age.

A Favorite!
Format: Board book
Having loved Richard Scarry books as a child in the 70's, I was thrilled when he regained popularity in the 90's when we were raising our children. Now I get to share this beloved classic with my granddaughter. She LOVES her Richard Scarry books and this one is wonderful. Every page has so many beautifully illustrated details so there are always new things to look at and discover. She is 18 months old and the Richard Scarry books have been instrumental in helping her vocabulary, now over 200 words. Highly recommend that you add this awesome book to your baby's library and read, read, read to your baby every chance you get!
