Er ist Musiker, Schriftsteller, Maler, war Clown und Chansonnier mit eigenen Liedern. Weltbekannt wurde der gelernte Konzertgeiger Armin Mueller-Stahl aber als Schauspieler – erst am Theater, bald auch im Film. Sein Komödiantentum, sein zweifelnder und zugleich warmherziger Blick und nicht zuletzt seine sonore Stimme machen ihn von Anfang an zum Publikumsliebling. Dabei schien es zunächst, als sollte seine Wirkung auf die DDR und einige osteuropäische Länder beschränkt bleiben.

Von 1955 an stand Armin Mueller-Stahl in erfolgreichen Kinofilmen und breit diskutierten Fernsehproduktionen vor der Kamera, in Arbeiten so bekannter Regisseure wie Frank Beyer und Slatan Dudow in der DDR sowie später Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Patrice Chéreau und István Szabó in Westeuropa. In den achtziger Jahren wagt er ohne Englischkenntnisse den Sprung nach Amerika und wird in Filmen von Steven Soderbergh, Jim Jarmusch, Brian de Palma und vielen anderen zum internationalen Star, der aber auch immer wieder in großen deutschen Produktionen wie »Die Buddenbrooks« und »Die Manns« auftritt.
Zu Mueller-Stahls Auszeichnungen gehören u.a. der Bundesfilmpreis, eine Oscar-Nominierung, der Adolf-Grimme-Preis, der Deutsche Filmpreis für das Lebenswerk, die Carl-Zuckmayer-Medaille und das Große Bundesverdienstkreuz mit Stern.


Der Filmhistoriker F.-B. Habel zeichnet Armin Mueller-Stahls überaus erfolgreichen Weg vor und hinter der Kamera nach und lässt ihn selbst zu Wort kommen. Dabei nimmt er den Leser mit auf eine packende Reise durch die Welt des Films.

Armin Mueller-Stahl, geboren 1930 in Tilsit, gehört zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Film-, Fernseh- und- Theaterschauspielern – in der DDR, der BRD und den USA. Er hat eine Vielzahl Preise erhalten und wurde für einen Oscar nominiert. Heute lebt er in der Nähe von Lübeck.
